Timothy Reagan

Notes:

Timothy Ragan, grandson of Timothy Ragan - Colonial Ancestor was probably born in the Elk Ridge community. His parents have not been identified, but research on this continues.

In his youth, he was probably taught to read and write by his mother, and was taught the art of farming and blacksmithing by his father. So this was one of his lifetime occupations. He was also a carpenter and as most men did in those days, he could do almost any chore needed in daily life.

An early church census verifies their birth years. The census was taken in St. John and Prince George Parishes, Prince George County, Maryland on 31 31 August 1776 and listed; Timothy Ragan, age 26, and Elizabeth Ragan, age 16. No children were listed.

Traditions say that Timothy had four brothers who all served in the Revolutionary War and afterward moved to Tennessee. Other Reagans found in that early period include: Jeremiah in Washington County, Daniel in Greene County, Charles in Blount County, and James in Sevier County and a James in Knox County. These men were all of an age to have been Timothy's brothers but no definite connection to any of them has been made.

Timothy Reagan served in the Revolution with the Continental Troops of Maryland. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Brandywine and again later in the war. Muster roll records found in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Show that he served as private with Captain John Eccleston, in the 2nd Regiment of Maryland Troops, commanded by Colonel Thomas Price. The records also show that he was left at a hospital in Chester, Pennsylvania, on 12 September 1777, the day after the Battle of Brandywine. He was reported as still being in the hospital six months later. No records of a pension or bounty land grants were found.

Timothy's name is found on the 1783 tax lists of Pittsylvania County, Virginia with five people in his family at that time. He does not appear on the tax lists for 1785.

His name is found in Caswell County, North Carolina, in the January and April counts of 1786. There were then seven persons in his family: a male age 21-60, 3 males under 21 or over 60, and 3 females.

Two grants of land, located in Caswell County, North Carolina, were recorded for Timothy Reagan. The first was issued in 1791 to Timothy Regan for 200 acres "on the waters of Fish Pond." Disposal of this land was recorded in
Caswell County, North Carolina Deed Book 'H', pages 110/11. The deed says "THIS INDENTURE made the thirteenth day of October and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety two Between Timothy Regan of the County of Caswell, North Carolina of the one part and Solomon Clark of the said County and State of the other part..." The second grant, dated 3 December 1795, was issued to Timothy Ragan and John Grant for 157 acres of land "on waters of Wolf Island." Records of disposal of this land have not been located yet but it is believed that Timothy moved to East Tennessee very soon after this date of 1795.

No mention of his name has been found in early records of the counties of Washington, Sullivan, Hawkins, Greene, or Jefferson. He is said to have joined a group of pioneers who pushed farther into the Indians' lands and built the settlement around the Shield's Fort, later Lawson's Fort, in Sevier County Tennessee. The late Joe A. Sharp, County Historian, believed this fort was located on Middle Creek. The date was probably a little later than the
settlement of Sevierville.

The State of Tennessee began issuing land grants in 1806 and the earliest found for Timothy Reagan was surveyed in 1807. According to the State Archivist, both land grants still in existence for Timothy were for purchased land, not bounty land. The first grant was surveyed 26 February 1807 and was granted 22 May 1810:

"... a certain tract or parcel of land containing fifty acres and one hundred and sixteen poles lying in the County of Sevier in the District South of French Broad and Holston on the waters of Middle Creek there being due and chargeable on said land the sum of fifty dollars and seventy-three cents with interest thereon..."

This tract joined the lands of Jennett (Shields) Tipton, widow of Joshua Tipton and the land of John Marshall. The second grant was entered 13 May 1824 and granted on 6 August 1824. This land joined a corner of Nancy Robinson's land:

"... or parcel of land containing twenty-five acres, lying in the County aforesaid. Beginning at a white oak on a line of said Reagan's old survey..."

Since this tract joined the old survey it is believed that this is where Timothy lived until his death, or until he went to live with his son, Richard, who had settled in White Oak Flats now Gatlinburg.

His great grandson, John H. Reagan, described Timothy as a tall, fine looking man, strong and having great vitality even in his older years. He was loved and respected by people and was fun-loving and witty. Being an Irishman, he enjoyed a practical joke now and then. A story handed down through the years tells that although he had built the stocks for the jail in Sevierville, he pretended that he did not know how they operated and persuaded the sheriff to sit in them to demonstrate for him. When the sheriff did he promptly locked them and enjoyed the fun at the sheriff's expense. (Wonder what happened when the sheriff did get out!)

We don't know the exact date of Timothy or Elizabeth's death. That he was living in 1824 is indicated by the entry of the land record above. Neither of them appear on the 1830 census of Sevier County so it is assumed their deaths
occurred before that date.

Family traditions say that Timothy Reagan was buried in an unmarked grave at White Oak Flats Cemetery, Gatlinburg, Tennessee near where the first person buried, in the lower left hand corner of the old part of the cemetery, looking up the Graveyard hill from the gate.

Timothy and Elizabeth Reagan had a large family, some say ten sons and one daughter. The North Carolina census indicates there were three females in the family in 1786 so there may have been more daughters in the family. Most of these children moved from Sevier County farther to the West and South. The oldest son, Richard, remained and was one of the first settlers of White Oak Flats, now Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

The eldest son of Timothy and Elizabeth Reagan, Richard was born in Maryland or Virginia. He moved with his parents to Virginia, North Carolina, and then to Sevier County, Tennessee. Here he married circa 1796, Julia Ann Shults. Richard Reagan was one of the early settlers in the Emert's Cove, moving either with or very soon after Frederick Emert settled there circa 1800. They moved from there to White Oak Flats (now Gatlinburg) circa 1806.

It has been often stated that Richard's son, Daniel Wesley Reagan, was the first white child born in White Oak Flats but this seems to be an error. A granddaughter said that Daniel Wesley was about four years old when the family moved to the Mill Creek site in White Oak Flats. The land records indicate this to be correct. Daniel Wesley was born in 1802 in Emert's Cove area and this makes the date of the family settling in White Oaks about 1806.

Most of Richard's adult life was spent in Sevier County, Tennessee and since the early records of the county have been lost only a few official records for him have been found. There are four land grant records in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee. The first of these four land grants, dated 1808 reads:

"...being in the county of Sevier and District South of French Broad and Holston on the East fork of Little Pigeon.... corner to Frederick Emmett....running with meanders of said river.... Then with the land of John Roberts on said river bank."

Richard paid 12 1/2 cents per acre for this land and although by the date of this grant it is known he had moved to the Mill Creek site in White Oaks, he retained this land and made the final payment in 1819.

The second grant in 1813 is for ten acres, part of an entry that had been assigned to Robert Wear. This was "in the county of Sevier in the White Oak Flats." This land ran up the river, crossed the same, and joined other lands of Richard Reagan, which indicates earlier land entries that have been lost.

The third land grant in 1813 was for fifty acres "...in the county aforesaid in the White Oak Flats on Stoney Creek..." From courses and directions in this grant, Stoney Creek must have been the name used for Mill Creek in the earlier days. It is now called LeConte Creek. The first is a very appropriate name.

The fourth land grant in 1828 reads: "...containing twenty-five acres, lying in the County aforesaid, on Mill Creek in the White Oak Flats." This land joined the land of Isaac Ogle, and Daniel W. Reagan as well as Richard's own lands.

In 1837 Daniel Wesley Reagan, Richard's son, had a grant surveyed for the purpose of joining the lands surveyed in Richard Reagan's name. It is apparent from this record that several of Richard's early records are missing. This grant for 100 acres included a narrow strip of land on both sides of the river from Mill Creek to Baskins Creek. (The grant is in a very legible handwriting and it is spelled BASKINS) At a line running along the upper side of the cemetery from Baskins Creek to "the lane" (Reagan Drive now) his land joined Thomas J. Ogle. From the lane to a point near Mill Creek, he joined lands of William and Isaac Ogle. Their land included what was once called the Airport Field.

Here on this farm in the heart of Gatlinburg, Richard's grandson, John H. Reagan, of Texas fame, was born in 1818. In the letter to his children written in 1865 while he was imprisoned after the Civil War, he said that his grandfather, Richard Reagan was of "....medium stature and good appearance, a very religious man, and member of the Methodist Episcopal church from his youth until his death...." He also said that Richard "owned the neighborhood mill and blacksmith shop; was justice of the peace for his precinct...." Richard was the class leader of the Methodist Society which met in his home before there was a meeting house built. He also kept the post office for the community. His grandson might have been writing his epithet when he said of Richard, "He was an upright good man....a contented and happy man, whose faith was in God and whose hope was in Heaven.."

Family records say that Richard died of a fractured skull in 1829. A family story handed down through the generations tells that "Richard Reagan died when as he was taking his horses from pasture to the barn, a limb flew off a beech tree and struck him in the head." Another family story tells the same thing at the same time - "A few days before the accident, a bird flew into the porch where he was sitting, smoking his pipe, and lit on his head. He sprang from his chair, declaring it was his 'death sign' and was greatly disturbed. Whether or not it was a warning, he thought it was. The accident happened and he died a few days after that."

Most sources say that Richard and Julia Ann Reagan had three sons and four daughters - it is possible there were others. One is thought to have been a son, Aaron Reagan, and a daughter named Barbara who died as a young girl. The other two daughters are unknown.

Tennessee to "the fever and ague country, north of the Ohio River" before 1810.
John H. Reagan, of Civil War fame, said, "...I seperated from my family before
I was grown and went to Texas, consequently know but little of other branches
of the faimly; but I remember when I was a boy hearing our family speak of two
of the sons of great grandfather moving to what was then called the fever and
ague country, north of the Ohio River. I am now 69 years old, and they went
there before I was old enough to remember them, possibly before I was born..."

Believied to be a daughter of Timothy and Elizabeth Reagan, Elizabeth was
probably born in Caswell County, North Carolina, moving with her parents to
Sevier County, Tennessee in late 1790's. Elizabeth was a sister to Sarah and
Dursilla Reagan as indicated by Emert family records and traditions. Also in
Donald B. Reagan's possession, a Reagan family record lists Elizabeth as a
sister of Richard Reagan.

It is believed that Elizabeth and Phillip lived in the Middle Creek area.
Elizabeth Reagan is listed in the 1830 Federal Census of Sevier County,
Tennessee. The latest land entry for Elizabeth was enter in 1835. Also she is
still living in 1837 according to 1837 Sevier County, Tennessee Tax List.

Elizabeth Reagan died in the Middle Creek area of Sevier County.

Sarah Ragan came with her parents to Sevier County, Tennessee in late 1795. She spent her early life before marriage near Shield's Fort on the Middle Creek farm of her father.

Sarah later lived with her husband Daniel Emmert in Emert's Cove which was opened up and first settled by Frederick Emmert, his father. They are listed in the 1830 through 1850 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.

Nancy Jane Reagan's parents brought her to Sevier County, Tennessee as a child
in late 1795 where she grew up.

Family tradition says she "lived with her sister, Rhoda in Alabama and later in
Illinois. She died in 1844 at age of fifty-five years." It was also said she
did not marry.

The 1840 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois verified the family
tradition about her. Apparently she was the female between 50 and 60 years old
in the household of James and Rhoda Ragan Huskey.

She died in Birds Township and was buried beside James and Rhoda Reagan Huskey
in the Huskey Family Cemetery (now Joiner Cemetery) in Birds Township. The
name on the tombstone is "Jane Ragan".

Celia married Frederick E. Emert, Jr. 5 Nov 1812, , Sevier County, Tennessee. Catherine "Caty" Reagan came with her parents as a baby to Sevier County,
Tennessee in late 1795. She was living with her parents in Sevier County when
her brother Reason Ragan returned from Illinois Territory about 1809. He had
run away from home earlier and had married in Kentucky. He and his wife moved
on to settle in Illinois Territory and he wanted Catherine "Caty" to return
there with him, which she did.

Catherine "Caty" lived with her brother Reason and sister-in-law Rachel in the
Wood River community of Madison County, Illinois Territory. She was there when
her brother's family was massacred by Indians on Sunday, 10 July 1814. She was
not feeling well and had remained with Rachel's sister instead of going with
Rachel and the children.

Then her brother lost his life while pursuing the Indians after the massacre
occurred. The records show Catherine "Caty" gave bond for administering the
estate of her brother Reason Ragan. The County Court of Madison County,
Illinois Territory appointed her as one of several administrators for her
brother's estate.

Catherine "Caty" died in Walkerville Township and was buried in the Hunnicut
Cemetery.

Jeremiah Ragan was born in the Middle Creek community where he grew up during the turbulent last days of the Indian troubles on the frontier and the early development days of Sevier County.

Jeremiah and his wife Mary were listed in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.

There are five land entries recorded for Jeremiah. The first entry [#46] dated 1 May 1824 was for 25 acres on the waters of the West Fork of Little Pigeon River. The second entry [#207] dated 21 August 1824 was for 50 acres in the White Oak Flats and the third entry [#1093] dated 7 December 1835 was for 125 acres on the West Fork of Little Pigeon River in the Sugar Lands. The fourth entry [#1238] dated 6 February 1837 was for 180 acres on the water of the West Fork of Little Pigeon River and the fifth entry [#1412] dated 4 November 1838 was for 133 acres on the right-hand prong of the West Fork of Little Pigeon River. All of these land entries were located in Sevier County, Tennessee. He received grants for all from the State of Tennessee. There is a deed for part of the dispsal of it.

Jeremiah Reagan joined the White Oak Flats Baptist Church an arm of "Forks of Little Pigeon" Baptist Church in Sevierville, at October 1833 meeting "by experience." This church was the origin of Gatlinburg's First Baptist Church.

He served as the church clerk for the White Oak Flats Baptist Church from November 1833 to April 1840. As the church clerk, he recopied all the first loose minute records into the first church minutes book ... in his own handwriting at the discretion of the church elders. He had beautiful handwriting, good spelling, grammar, etc., which indicates he had good teachers in those early days.

Also from the church minutes we learn that the church voted to exclude Jeremiah "for suing David L. Reagan without first bringing him to church and disobey call of church" on 26 Sep 1840. But the church restored him to full fellowship in December 1844 and granted "Jeremiah Reagan and his wife Mary" a letter of dismissal.

There is one deed recorded at the Register of Deeds office at Sevier County Courthouse for Jeremiah Reagan that gives clues to his leaving the Gatlinburg area. A partial excerpt from Deed Book 'K', page 324 shows ... "This Indenture made this twenty sixth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and forty four between JEREMIAH REAGAN of the County of Cherokee and State of North Carolina of the one part and Stephen Huskey of the County of Sevier and State of Tennessee of the other part..."

This seems to have been the time of their move from Tennessee to North Carolina. He and his wife Mary lived in Cherokee County, North Carolina for a brief time.

Then they moved to Gordon County, Georgia prior to 1850. He and Mary were listed in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census of Gordon County, Georgia. There were no children in the household for both years. They were living alone in the Fairmont District of the said county.

Sometime during the 1860's, Jeremiah and Mary moved to Bartow County, Georgia. They were listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Bartow County with, still, no children in the household.

In 1880 Jeremiah and his second wife Eliza were listed in the Federal Census of Bartow County, Georgia. Jeremiah was 81 years old and was born in the State of Tennessee. His parents were listed as born in Maryland.

The family tradition states that "he was buried in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery."

Timothy Ragan Jr. was born in the Middle Creek community where he grew to manhood.

Timothy Ragan Jr. sigend his name as a witness to the will of Phillip Emmert, his wife's uncle, on 20 March 1821. The "Junior" was added as a part of his signature.

Timothy and Barbara Shultz Ragan Jr. were living in the area of Timothy Creek, part of Emert Cove, now a part of Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Probably this creek was named for this Timothy. He and his wife Barbara were listed in the 1830 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. There they had one son under five years of age; and three daughters age 5-10 years in the household.

Two more sons were born in here Tennessee to Timothy and Barabara. Then they and their growing family migrated to Madison County, Missouri by wagon train in June of 1834. They settled in the area near Marquand, Missouri. Shortly after their arrival, his wife Barbara Shultz Ragan was stricken with an unknown illness and died.

Timothy and his second wife Martha M. Moore were listed in the 1840 Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri. There were two males and one female under five years of age; two males age 5-10 years; one male and one female age 10-15 years; and two females age 15-20 years in the household then.

On 30 August 1841, Timothy Ragan Jr. purchased 54 acres of land from John Cobb and his wife Louisa for $70.00 in Madison County, Missouri. It was "the undivided half of the west half of Lot No. 2 North East quarter of Section No. 6 in Township No. 32 North of Range No. 8 East."

Timothy and Martha were listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri with seven children at home. They were: Benjamin B., age 16; William P., age 14, George L., age 13; Sarah C., age 11; James G., age 9; Henry P., age 7; and Margaret T., age 4. Three daughters, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Mary, and one son, Richard Rainwater had married and left to start their own families.

Daniel Emmet Ragan was not living at home at that time and was not located in the census records.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Timothy and Martha were listed in Bollinger County, Missouri. There were five children at home. They were: Sarah, age 21; James, age 18; Henry, age 16; Margaret, age 14; and Jane, age 9. In the 1870 Federal Census of Bollinger County, Missouri, they were again listed with three children still at home. They were: W. B., age 34; James, age 29; and Martha,
age 19.

After his second wife's death Timothy was living with his son and daughter-in-law, James Gasney and Elmitta E. Matthews Reagan. Again he was listed in the same household in the 1880 Federal Census of Bollinger County, Missouri. He was 80 years old at that time.

It is believed by descendants of this family that Timothy and Martha M. Moore Ragan Jr. were buried in the family cemetery on the farm.

The land was granted on 15 August, 1826 by the State of Tennessee.

Joshua Ragan and his wife Jane Huskey Ragan were listed in the 1830 Sevier County, Tennessee Federal Census. There were three children in the family: two males and one female age five years and under. They were living in the Gatlinburg area at that time.

In 1831, Joshua Reagan and his family migrated to Madison County, Missouri and made their home there until the "Fall of 1835". At that time the family moved to Macoupin County, Illinois. He worked for two months as a wood chopper and rail splitter in St. Clair County, Illinois in early 1836.

In June of 1836 he and Jane moved with their children to Macoupin County, Illinois. He bought 40 acres of farm on Hodges Creek in Bird Township of Macoupin County, Illinois. He hastily constructed a log cabin for his family for the coming winter. He farmed here for five years.

Joshua and Jane were listed in the 1840 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois. They had eight children at that time in the household: two males age 10 and 15 years; and one female age 15 and 20 years.

In 1841 Joshua sold this farm and went to North Palmyra Township in Macoupin County, Illinois. He rented a farm here for three years. Then in 1844 he bought eighty acres of land in the Barr Township of Macoupin County, Illinois. Here he, Jane, and their family resided for several years.

Joshua and Jane appeared in the 1850 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois. There were eight children at home. They were: John, age 23; Richard, age 21; Robert, age 19; Isaac H., age 17; James, age 13; Elizabeth J., age 11; Francis M., age 8; and Martha, age 5. Their eldest daughter, Catherine, was already married and lived nearby according to the census record.

In September of 1856, Joshua and his wife Jane went with the part of their family to Phelps County, Missouri where Jane died.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he and a few of his children returned to Macoupin County, Illinois.

In the 1870 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois, Joshua was listed with his son, James Miller Ragan. They were living in Township 11, Range 8 there at that time.

Joshua died at his farm in "Sowest Section 29, Township 11, Range 8".

Joshua died intestate according to the existing Macoupin County, Illinois records. His son, Francis Marion Ragan, was appointed as administrator of his father's estate by the Court of Macoupin County, Illinois on 19 November 1874.

A final settlement of the estate was ordered and made by the County Court on 1 January 1877. The names of Joshua and Jane Huskey Ragan's children are given in the intestate popers still in existence.

In 1836, they moved and stayed a few months in St. Clair County, Illinois. Then in June of 1836 they bought a farm in Bird Township, Macoupin County, Illinois.

Timothy Richard died while on his way to join his son in Texas. This Timothy
Reagan and his wife, Elizabeth Lusk, were the parents of John H. Reagan of
Texas and Civil War fame.

John H. Reagan described his father as being very mechanically inclined and
good at many trades - being a good blacksmith, boot and shoe maker, tanner,
saddle maker, gunsmith, silversmith, very adept at woodworking, and able to
repair most any kind of clock or watch. John H. also said, "He was a
man of exemplary piety and of benevolent disposition, and was a member
of the Methodist church from his youth to the end of his life".

Probably because of his ability in these trades Timothy Richard moved from
Gatlinburg to the Sevierville area where the demand for his services would be
greater. Sometime after 1838 he moved to Knox County, Tennessee where he lived
for a few years.

Timothy with Elizabeth and their family appear in the 1830 Federal Census of
Sevier County, Tennessee.

Also found in the Knox County 1840 Federal Census is a listing for him.

Daniel moved with his parents to White Oak Flats (Gatlinburg) when he was about four years old. He lived all of his life here or on various other tracts of land in the area.

Listed as Ragan in 1850 Sevier County, Tennessee census as farmer with $1000 property unable to read or write.

An industrious man, Daniel began acquiring land before he married. In theTennessee State Library and Archives there are records of eight entries in his name, dating from 1824 to 1872. The state archivist says this was all purchased land. He is listed in the 1837 tax lists of Sevier County, Tennessee.

An 1859 grant, previously surveyed land, was resurveyed and entered probably because of Gatlin's extensive claim in the area and the Courthouse fire. This 1859 grant was for 600 acres up both sides of the river from Baskins Creek to the Two Mile Branch. In May 1866, he added another 640 acres to this holding. There are also grants for 1,000, 600, and 4,000 acres on Roaring Fork granted in 1839, 1868 and 1872. Most of this land was divided among his children - no will has been found. Daniel moved around and lived on several of his farms - his wife said after his death that she wanted to spend the rest of her years in one spot, she was so tired of moving. She spent her remaining years with her stepdaughter and her husband, Mariah and Thomas H. McCarter.

Daniel was a blacksmith as well as a farmer. Tradition says he built the first wagon in the settlement, making the wheels of one piece of split white oak. His son, Charles C. Reagan, built the first wagon that crossed the Smokies. Although no record has been found to verify it, Daniel probably served as a Justice of Peace. He did keep the community post office. When the settlement officially became Gatlinburg and the post office was established, Daniel and Joel Conner received the contract to carry the mail from Sevierville to Casher's Valley, South Carolina. Daniel's sons, Richard R. and Ephraim Reagan, served as postmaster in the village.

Definitely a Union man but too old to go to service during the Civil War, Daniel served as "muster" officer and drilled the men of the village out in the "Flats". He also served the community as food distributor. Because of his activities and his three oldest sons being in the Union army, he often had to hide out in the mountains to escape the Confederates. The youngest son, Charles C., often told of his father taking him to the woods and showing him the meat and food supplies he had hidden. Daniel didn't think the Rebels would bother the women and children and if he did have to hide out, then Charles must see that food was brought in for the people as it was needed---a big responsibility for a seven year old boy.

A civic minded man, Daniel furnished the meeting house for the village--the five sided building used for the school, church and "voting place". According to one of the land grants, this was located at the "mouth of the lane", now Reagan Lane, near the old River Road. Although he furnished the meeting place for the Baptist Church for many years, Daniel was not found on the membership roll of the church and did not give the land for the present building site, as has been stated by many sources.

Daniel Wesley Reagan did give the land for the oldest part of the White Oak Flats Cemetery (Gatlinburg Cemetery) to the community. This was originally a family plot on the farm of his father, Richard Reagan. The first burial there was a child of Daniel Milsaps, the first school teacher in Gatlinburg.

In 1834, Albert Huskey and his family migrated to Madison County, Missouri to join the families of Joshua Reagan and Timothy Reagan Jr.

In the Madison County, Missouri Deed Book 6, page 292/93, there is recorded a deed for land sold by Albert Huskey and his wife, Jane Huskey..."This indenture made and executed this 12th day of March 1836 between Albert Huskey and Jane Huskey, his wife, Madison County, Missouri and Benjamin Heltebrand...S.E. 1/4 of N.W. 1/4 Section 21, Township 33 N, Range 8 East...40 acres. Albert Huskey entered at the land office at Jackson, Missouri on the 10th of November 1834 as appears by the duplicate no. 1951." It was signed by Albert Huskey and his wife, Jane Huskey.

For some reason, Albert Huskey and his family came back to Sevier County, Tennessee prior to 1839. In 1839, Albert joined the White Oak Flats Baptist Church "by experience". They also appeared in the 1840 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. In 1845, they were again in Sevier County, Tennessee probably because of illness and death in his and his wife's families. Julia Ann Shutz Reagan, mother of Jane, died in April of 1845. Isaac Huskey Sr. died sometime in 1846.

On Oct 1846, Albert Huskey and his wife received their letter of dismissal from the White Oak Flats Baptist Church.

Just about 1847/48, Albert Huskey and his family migrated to Gilmer County, Georgia near Copperhill Tennessee. James Ownby and his family, and Jacob Evans and his wife joined them. They appeared in the 1850 Federal Census of Gilmer County, Georgia.

It is believed that Albert Huskey and his family migrated again to Missouri after the 1850 Federal Census was taken. It is believed that Albert and his wife, Jane Reagan, are buried in the state of Missouri or Arkansas.

David died at Gallatin, Tennessee on 20 June 1864, while serving with the Union Army during the Civil War.

David L. was a farmer and for a period of time in the 1830's served as clerk of the White Oak Flats Baptist Church in Gatlinburg. He became a member of the church at the March 1833 meeting "by experience."

During the Civil War, David served with the Union under Captain William J. Trotter in the 9th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Company H, commanded by Colonel Joseph Parsons. The company was organized at Sevierville and David L. enlisted, 1 October 1836, for three years. He was mustered in at Knoxville, 28 October 1863. His death which occurred at Gallatin, Tennessee was probably due to typhoid fever.

An affidavit filed with his wifes pension claim states that they were married about the 1st of July 1833 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee by William Trentham, Justice of Peace.

Notes:

Although the event is not recorded in the church records, he and Winnifred must
have joined the White Oak Flats Baptist Church by experience. The church
granted him and his wife Winnifred a "letter of dismissal" at the October 1846
meeting. This seems to have been the time of their move from Tennessee to
Georgia.

Then they moved to Bartow County, Georgia prior to 1850. He and Winnifred were
listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Cass (later Bartow) County, Georgia.
There they had five children in the household. They were: William, age 8;
James, age 6; Albert, age 4; Sarah C., age 3; and Mary, age 10 months.

Again in the 1860 Federal Census of Cass (later Bartow) County, Georgia, he and
his wife Winnifred were listed with nine children at home. They were:
William, age 18; James, age 16; Albert, age 14; Sarah, age 12; Mary, age 10;
Reubin, age 7; Henry, age 5; John G., age 4; and Zachariah, age 2.

It has been stated that John D. and his wife Winnifred were also listed in the
1870 and 1880 Federal Census of Bartow County, Georgia.

Family tradition says that his second wife's family did not favor their
marriage. As it has been stated in the family tradition, he "was sent to the
town of Little Rock, Arkansas by his children. He died and was buried there."

James H. Reagan was born in the White Oak Flats community untile his marriage.
In both the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee, he is
listed with his parents.

James H. went across the Great Smoky Mountains and met his future bride, Martha
"Patsy" Bradley on the Bradley Fork of Oconalufty River in Haywood County,
North Carolina.

Shortly after the marriage, James H. and his wife Martha "Patsy" Bradley moved
to Sevier County, Tennessee for a "temporary" two years stay. Then they
returned to Bradley Fork of Oconalufty River in Haywood County, North Carolina
to establish their permanent home.

On 29 May 1848, James H. bought 89 acres of land from his father-in-law Isaac
Bradley for $10.00. This land was located on the watershed of Bradley Fork,
part of Oconalufty River in Haywood County, North Carolina. It began "at a
Beech on the North side of said River on the waggon Road..."

James H. and his wife Martha were listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Haywood
County, North Carolina. There were three children in the household at that
time: Sarah, age; Thomas, age 3; and Jerrymiah, age 1.

On 9 January 1851, James H. bought 25 acres of land from John Hyde of Cherokee
County, North Carolina for $25.00. This land was located "on the left hand
fork of Ocona Lufta River known by the name of Morrison's Flats" in Haywood
County, North Carolina.

In 1860 James H. and his wife Martha were listed in the Federal Census of
Jackson County, North Carolina. They now had seven children in the household.
They were: Sarah, age 16; Thomas, age 14; Chasteen, age 10; Marcus, age 8;
Jeremiah A., age 6; John, age 4; and Isaac, age 1.

On 22 June 1861, James H. sold 10 acres of land to his brother-in-law Thomas
Bradley for $10.00. This land located on the watershed of Bradley Fork, part
of Oconalufty River in Jackson County, North Carolina. It began "at a Beech on
the North bank of the left hand fork of Oconalufty on the bank of the Road
above the residence of the said Thomas Bradley..." This was the land that
James H. had purchased from his father-in-law Isaac Bradley.

Two years later on 2 March 1863, James H. Reagan enlisted as a private in
Company F. Thomas' Legion which was commanded by Colonel William H. Thomas. It
is most likely that he served out his enlistment in Company F, Thomas' Legion
from Jackson County, North Carolina. After he was discharged, he went home to
resume farming on his lands.

James H. died in the Oconalufty River community and was probably buried in the
Bradley-Carver Cemetery in the Bradley Fork area, Great Smoky Mountains
National Park.

In the Abstract of Titles for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there was
noted "outstanding interests of the heirs at law of James Reagan for a
one-eight each in that portion of tract" of land. Also another interesting
item about this family was noted in the file...

"James Reagan died leaving the following children and heirs at law,
to wit.;
"Sarah Roberts, husband Dan Roberts
"Thomas Reagan
"J. Chastain Reagan
"Mark Reagan
"Bige Reagan
"John C. Reagan
"Isaac Reagan
"Mary Jane Bradley, husband General Bradley"

Combining these excerpts and the census records verifies the names of the
children of James and Martha "Patsy" Bradley Reagan.

Richard Rainwater Ragan was born in the Emert Cove community where he lived
with his family until he migrated with them in 1834 to Madison County,
Missouri. He appeared in his parent's listing in the 1830 Federal Census of
Sevier County, Tennessee. Later he was listed with his parents in the 1840
Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri.

Richard Rainwater and his first wife Rutha Caroline were listed in the 1850
Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri. There was one child in the
household named Roberta Miller, age 2. This may have been a daughter from a
previous marriage of Rutha.

Richard Rainwater and his wife Rutha Caroline were listed in the 1860 Federal
Census of Bollinger County, Missouri. They had four children in the household
then. They were Mary E., age 9; Timothy B., age 7; George W., age 5; and
Margaret, age 2.

On 3 September 1864, Richard Rainwater Ragan enlisted as a private in Company
F, 50th Regiment of Missouri Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He was
discharged on 8 April 1865 at St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri after
serving six months five days duty.

He and his wife Rutha were again listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Bollinger
County. There were now eight children in the household: Mary, age 19; Benton,
age 17; George, age 15; Margaret, age 12; James, age 8; Ruth, age 5; Charles,
age 3; and Edwin, age 1.

In the 1880 Federal Census, he and his wife Rutha were still listed in
Bollinger County, Missouri. There were five children at home then: Margaret
A., age 22; James H., age 17; Ruth C., age 15; Charles H., age 13; and Dewitt
E., age 11.

Richard Rainwater died in Crooked Creek Township and was buried beside his
first wife in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Daniel Emmit Ragan was born in the Emert Cove community where he lived forabout four years. Then his parents took the family from Tennessee to Madison County, Missouri in June of 1834. He was listed under his parents in the 1840 Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri.

Daniel and his second wife Delania were listed in the 1860 Federal Census of Iron County, Missouri. There was only one child in the household: Benjamin James, age 8. He was believed to be a son of Daniel's first marriage. In the 1870 Federal Census, Daniel and Delania were listed in Iron County, Missouri. They had six children in their household. They were: Flora Jane, age 10; Mary, age 10; John Edward, age 8; Emily Laura, age 6; Samuel B., age 4;
and Genevie, age 2. In the 1880 Federal Census of Iron County, Missouri, they had eight children recorded in the family. They were: Flora J., age 19, Mary J., age 19; John E., age 17; Laura E., age 15; Samuel Banks., age 13; Porissena E., age 9; Burton E., age 4; and Joseph A., age 2.

Daniel and his wife Delania also appeared in the 1900 Federal Census of Iron County, Missouri. There were two married sons and their wives living with them. They were: Emmett, age 24-Dec 1875, and his wifeRose, age 22-Jul 1877; Joseph, age 22-Feb 1878, and his wife Delpha, age 29-Jun 1870.

A great grandson Thomas Rudolph "Rudy" Reagan gave a short narration about the family and homeplace in Iron County. It is as follows:

"I do not remember Daniel, for he died the year I was born, however, I do slightly remember Delania. The last time I saw her [and one of the few], I was only three or four years old. It was at the old home place some five or six miles from Ironton, in a quit hill country area of Iron County, known because of a peacefully rolling stream, as Stout's Creek, which evidently got it's name from one [or more] of the earlier settlers.

"The 'Home Place' was situated at the top of a sizeable knoll, which droppedrather sharply on the south, east and west sides. The north side tapered more gently into the flatter country and the farm land. The house was of rugged
construction, sturdy and comfortable. A large stone fireplace was set into the west wall of the 'Parlor' and in the front of it's white stone hearth is where Delania, wearing her usual full cut, floor length dress, tight knit cap and a
knit shawl thrown around her shoulders, spent many hours after Daniel's death, slowly rocking in her favorite rocker, smoking her white clay pipe, and peering endlessly into the crackling flames dancing in the fireplace. I have often wondered what she saw. Was she reliving her life with Daniel -- raising their family again? There was quite a family."

Daniel was buried in the Knight of Pythias Cemetery.

Benjamin Bradford Ragan was born in the Emert Cove Community. He was a three
or four month baby when his parents migrated to Madison County, Missouri in
June of 1834. Benjamin Bradford was listed with his parents in both the 1840
and 1850 Federal Census of Madison County, Missouri.

Benjamin Bradford was hired to drive an ox team at the Pilot Knob Furnace in
Iron County, Missouri in 1854 when he was 20 years old. Beginning with this
position, he filled every position up to the superintendent of the furnace.

In the 1860 Federal Census of Iron County, Missouri, he was listed as the head
of the household. His occupation at that time was hostler.

Benjamin and hjis wife Utica were listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Iron
County, Missouri. There were two daughters in the household: Hatta, age 5;
and Edith B., age 2. A son born in 1863 had died about a year later. Hatta
died in late 1870.

He left his job at Pilot Knob Furnace to take the job as the "receiver of coal"
at Midland Blast Furnace, Crawford County, Missouri in 1875. Four years later
he was hired as "wood-boss" in 1879.

In the 1880 Federal Census, he and his wife Utica were listed in Crawford
County, Missouri. They had tree daughters in the home. They were: Edith W.,age 11; Mary U., age 9; and Grace E., age 7.

A bit later at Midland Blast Furnace in Crawford County, Missouri, he was
promoted to be superintendent. He retained this position until his retirement.

Benjamin Bradford and Utica were still listed in the 1900 Federal Census of
Crawford County, Missouri. There were three daughters in the household: Edith
B., age 30-Jul 1869; Mary Utica, age 28-Oct 1871; and Grace E., age 25-Mar
1875.

Benjamin Bradford Reagan was buried beside his wife in the Knight of Pythias
Cemetery.

William B. was listed with his parents in the 1870 Federal Census of Bollinger
County, Missouri. His occupation was described at that time as a "gold miner."

William B. died in the Crooked Creek Township.

George L. Ragan grew up on the farm where he was listed with his parents in the

James Gasney Reagan was listed with his parents in the 1850 Federal Census of
Madison County, Missouri and the 1860 Federal Census of Bollinger County,
Missouri.

On 27 July 1863, James Gasney enlisted as a private in Company M, 5th Regiment
of Missouri Volunteers during the Civil War. He was discharged on Friday, 8
July 1864 after serving 11 months 10 days duty. His widow Elmittie E. was
granted a pension on his military service record.

James Gasney was living with his parents at the time of the 1870 Federal Census
of Bollinger County. His occupation at that time was listed as farmer.

James G. and his wife Elmittie E. were listed in the 1880 Federal Census of
Bollinger County, Missouri. There were three children in the household: EffieV., age 8; William B., age 7; and Martha E., age 4.

They remained on the farm where he was born all of his life. The family bible
of Timothy Jr. went to James Gasney Ragan and in 1993 was in the possession of
a descendant of Rosa Octavina Reagan Grindstaff.

James Gasney Ragan was buried in the Rhods Chapel Cemetery.

On 31 August 1864, Henry Peterson Ragan enlisted as a private in Company T,
50th Regiment of Missouri Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He was
discharged on 21 March 1865. These are records of his military service in the
National Archives.

Obituary

R. R. Ragan, an old and Honored Citizen, dies.

Richard R. Ragan, son of Joshua and Jane Ragan, was born Septeber the 3rd.
1828 in Sevier Co. Tenn, and departed this life in Palmyra, Ill. April the 8,
1916, age 87 years, 7 months and five days.

He, with his parents, moved to Missouri in 1831. Five years later they moved
to Illinois, settling in St. Clair Co., later in the same year they came to
Macoupin Co., first residing eight miles north of Carlinville and finally
coming to Palmyra.

Mr. Reagan made a profession of religion and accepted his Master as guide at
the age of 14, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining a very
faithful member the remaining seventy three years of his life. When Mr. Ragan
became of age he entered the profession of teaching school and followed this
vocation for seven years until 1856, at which time he turned his attention to
farming. He kept at this latter occupation until 1871, when after several
winters of teaching, he removed to Palmyra, Ill in the year 1876. Since that
time until a few years ago, Mr. Ragan was a hardware merchant in our vicinity.
He joined the free and accepted order of Masons, and was also a member of the
Grand Army Post number 278, having served in the Union Army during the days of
the Rebellion (Civil War). He was justice of the Peace for fifteen years.

R. R. Reagan was united in marriage to Sarah E. Patterson in 1853, and after
only five years of fellowship together she received the call triumphant in the
year 1857. One son was born to this union, John C. Ragan, now of St. Louis,
Mo. Mr. Ragan was again united in marriage in 1858 to Mrs. Margaret Simpson
Patterson. For 36 years they walked down life's road together in sympathy and
toil, and then God beckoned and she responded. To this union was born one child
Mrs. Rosa Belle Angelo. He was again united in Marriage in the year 1895 to
Mary E. Story, and for the remaining twenty some years of his life she has ever
been his faithful helpmate; with love and tenderness she has stood by his side
in all the trying moments of age and sickness, and today at this sad moment,
she is the chiefest among them who mourn his departure.

The mourners of the late Richard R. Ragan are his widow, Mrs. Mary Ragan; one
son, John C.; one daughter, Rose Angelo; five grandsons, Will, Ray and Albert
Ragan and Percy Angelo of Palmyra; and Reuben of Jacksonville; four grand
daughters, Mrs. Maurice Richie, Miss Una Angelo of Palmyra, and Mrs. Margaret
Fitzgerarld of Jacksonville; five great grand daughters, Irene, Hilda, Mildred
and Olive Ragan, and Margaret Dorks; two great grand sons Donald Ragan, and
Loren Richie, and besides these one brother, several more distant relatives and
a multitude of friends.

I, Richard R. Reagan, was born Sept. 3rd. 1828, in Sevier County East Tenn. My
Father's name was Joshua, Grand Father's name was Timothy and Grand Mother
Reagan's maiden name was Elizabeth Trigg. My Mother's name was Jane Huskey and
Grand Mother Huskey's maiden name was Jane Mill. I went with my parents to
Madison County Missouri, in the fall of 1828, where we resided till late in the
fall of 1835, when I again moved with the family to St. Clair County, Ill.,
where Father got a job of work for a month or two as wood chopper and rail
splitter on the banks of the Mississippi River. Then about June when the
family was again on the move we landed in Macoupin County, Ill., which has been
my home since the summer of 1836. Father bought a small farm on Hodges' Creek,
where he erected a log cabin; where we lived until the Spring of 1838, when we
resided on this place till the spring of 1844, when we emigrated to a farm which
Father bought in what is now Barr township. Here the family resided till Sept.
1856, when Father and Mother and the minor children moved to Phelps County,
Missouri, where after a few years Mother died. After the breaking out of the
war, Father and a few of the Children returned to Ill.

As to my own history, I would state; that I was converted in a Camp Meeting in
the fall of 1842, I think, and united with the M. E. Church in what is now Bird
Township. After some years the Church went down and most of the Class moved
their membership where it was rather inconvenient for me to attend; so I united
with the C. P. Church, it being very convenient for me to attend. After I moved
to Palmyra, I again united with the Methodist Church. I was first married to
Miss Sarah E. Patterson, in Oct. 1853. Of this union 2 children were born, one
of which died in infancy. The other (J. C. Reagan) lives. My wife died in Feb
1857. I was again married to my second wife, Margaret Simpson Patterson in
April, 1858. Of this marriage only one child was born, now Mrs. C. P. Angelo.
My second wife died in Oct. 1894.

I was again married to Miss Mary E. Story, of Queen City, Mo., Sept. 1895. My
wives were all members of the M. E. Church before their marriage. I was made
of Mason in about 1881, and am still a member. I belong to the G. A. Post No.
278, Palmyra, Ill.

I was enlisted in the Union Army, the first of Feb. 1865, and served a little
over 13 months; was discharged at Springfield, March, 3rd, 1866. After the
Pension Law of 1890 was passed, I applied under that Act for a pension and was
allowed a pension of 6 dollars per month. In due time I applied for an
increase of pension and kept it up till I was finally allowed a pension of
Twelve dollars per month, which comes very hand on in 3 months. Uncle Sam, I
think is very generous to his old boys.

Yesterday and today have been terrible cold for summertime. I do not know what
is to become of me. I must write a letter to Mother Story and also to Sister
Belle.

Isaac Huskey Ragan moved with his parents from his birthplace to St. Clair
County, Illinois in the "Fall of 1835." Then in "June of 1836", he went with
his parents to Macoupin County, Illinois.

He was listed as living with his parents in the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census of
Macoupin County, Illinois. About September 1856 he and his parents migrated to
Phelps County, Missouri. Here he lived until his marriage.

Isaac H. and Nancy J. were listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Phelps County,
Missouri. There were four children in the household. They were: James S.,
age 10; Martha J., age 8; Sarah J., age 6; and Susan J. L., age 3.

Isaac H. and his wife Nancy J. were also listed in the 1880 Federal Census of
Phelps County, Missouri. They now had seven children in the household. There
they were: James, age 20; Jane, age 18; Sarah, age 16; Susan, age 12; Eliza
A., age 10; William, age 4; and George W., age 2/12.

Isaac H. and Nanch J. divorced sometime during the 1880's.

James Miller "Madison" Ragan lived in Macoupin County, Illinois until the
migration to Phelps County, Missouri in the mid-1850s. Most of the family give
James' middle name as "Madison." The Watts Journal, (the original is housed in
the Western Historical Collection at The University of Missouri at Rolla)
corrected this to read as "James Miller Ragan."

James M. was listed with his parents in the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census of
Macoupin County, Illinois. In September 1856 he moved with them to Phelps
County, Missouri. He lived there until his marriage.

In 1870 he and his wife Susan J. were listed in the Federal Census of Macoupin
County, Illinois. There were three children and James' father in the
household: Jane, age 8; Marion, age 6; Elizabeth, age 3; and Joshua, age 66.
In June 1873 he and his wife Susan J. returned to Phelps County, Missouri.

James M. and Susan J. were again listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Phelps
County, Missouri. They now had five children in the home. They were: James
M., age 16; Elizabeth C., age 13; Isaac B., age 7; John W., age 4; and Frances

Francis Marion Ragan lived in Macouping County, Illinois until leaving for his
military service with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was listed
with his parents in the 1850 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois. In
the 1860 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois, he was listed with his
brother, Richard Robinson Ragan.

Serving with the Confederate Army, Francis Marion Ragan enlisted as a private
in Company D, 8th Regiment of Missouri Infantry on 7 August 1862 at Eleven
Points Mill in Shannon County, Missouri. His term of enlistment was for three
years, or, the duration of the war. His personal description at the enlistment
was grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, and was 5 feet 7 inches tall. He
was a Junior 2nd Lieutenant when his regiment surrendered at New Orleans,
Louisiana on 26 May 1865. He was a prisoner of war for a very short time and
was paroled on 7 June 1865 in Alexandria, Louisiana.

He returned home in late 1865 to Macoupin County, Illinois where his father was
living during the Civil War. He "was a school teacher at Lick Skillet school
near Palmyra in Macoupin County, Illinois. The little schoolhouse was still
standing" in 1993 according to direct descendants.

Francis Marion Ragan and his second wife Elizabeth were listed in the 1870
Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois. He was appointed as administrator
for his father's estate by the Macoupin County Court after his father's death
13 October 1874. The final settlement was made in 1878.

After settling his father's estate, Francis Marion and his wife Elizabeth
migrated to Henderson County, Texas. In the 1880 Federal Census, they were
listed in Henderson County, Texas. There were two children in the household:
Lucy A., age 8; and Windrield B., age 1.

Francis Marion Ragan was buried in the Sonora Cemetery.

John H. left Tennessee in 1839 for Texas, then a Republic, and settled in the eastern portion of the state where he resided until his death. Without a doubt, John H. Reagan is still Gatlinburg's most illustrious son.

A brief summary of his accomplishments includes: surveyor of public lands in Texas; lawyer, admitted to the bar in 1846; state representative 1847-1849; district judge, 1852-1857; Representative to U. S. Congress, 1857-1861; delegate to Secession Convention of Texas in 1861; Postmaster General of Confederacy; acting Secretary of Confederacy. In 1875 he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention; U.S. Representative, 1875-1887; U. S. Senator from Texas, 1887-1891; a member of State Railroad Comission, served as chairman 1897-1903.

John was imprisoned after the Civil War presumably for his high post in the Confederacy.

John H. returned to his birth place only once, 22 August 1900, after sixty-three years absence. He and his wife received a heartwarming reception in Sevierville where he spoke at the Courthouse and received friends at a reception later. He spent two days visiting with his cousins in Gatlinburg.

John H. Reagan reared his first wife's two sons.

Joseph Daniel Reagan was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South. He became an exorter when 18 years of age.

In 1852 he emigrated to Missouri. He was married to his wife by Davie Coulter,
pastor of New Bloomfield Prebysterian Church in Calloway County, Missouri.

He was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South at
Jefferson City, Missouri in 1867, having been appointed pastor of Lebanon
Circuit. Two years later he resided at Stoutland, where he remained except a
short residence in Richland until his death.

He was a man of good literary atainment, being a forceful and eloquent public
speaker, a vigorous and fluent prose writer, a successful teacher, and a poet
of considerable ability.

"The funeral was held at the Baptist Church in Stoutland, Missouri, by Elder J.
M. Hibbs, of the Baptist Church, on Saturday, January 24th, 1891, in the
presence of most of the family and a large congregation of sympathizing friends
and acquaintances. The remains were interred Saturday evening in the Stoutland
Cemetery."

Morris R. Reagan moved with his parents to the vicinity of Sevierville,
Tennessee in the late 1820's. He was living with his parents at the tim of the
1830 Federal Census of Sevier County and the 1840 Federal Census of Knox
County, Tennessee.

Morris R. Reagan migrated with his brother and sisters to the State of Texas
after their father's death in 1847. There he was living with John Henninger
Reagan, his older brother at the time of the 1850 Federal Census of Henderson
County, Texas.

He and his first wife Martha Julia were listed in the 1860 Federal Census of
Travis County, Texas. There were two daughters in the household at that time:
S. A., age 3; and J., age 1.

Morris R. Reagan was appointed as a "mail agent for Texas" in September 1861.
He was the younger brother of John H. Reagan, Postmaster General.

In the "Annals of Travis County and of the City of Austin" by Frank Brown, it
is recorded that Morris R. "resided about two and a half miles South of town,
at the Terrill place" and he "accidently stepped off the gallery, at night, and
was so seriously injured that he died a few days thereafter."

Notes:

William Reason Reagan went to Texas in 1849 and settled first in Red River
County. There he attended McKinney College. After leaving that institution,
he taught school for two years at Marlin, Falls County. During his spare time,
he studied law and in 1857 was admitted to the bar. He opened an office and
practiced law. In 1874, he romoved to Reagan, a small town named for him. In
1880, he moved to Georgetown where he lived until his death.

During the Civil War, he first enlisted in the 13th Cavalry, but in 1862, was
appointed enrolling officer for Falls County. While the war was in progress,
he was entrusted with an important mission to Richmond, Virginia in the
interest of the Postal service of the Confederacy.

In 1865, he was elected judge of Falls County.

"The Waco Examiner" records an episoded that took place during the
reconstruction days in the State of Texas:

"Judge Reagan, from Falls County, was arrested on the 5th inst., on the square,
and carried to the military camp. The following are the particular: The Judge
was suspected of having thrown a brick-bat into the military camp, and upon
this suspicion was arrested by the soldiers, and liberated shortly after his
arrest. The Judge again appeared on the square armed, and the Sheriff, Mr.
Morris, interpreting his demonstration as hostile, arrested him again, and upon
which he was taken by the U.S. soldiers in the custody at their camps."

Died from poisonous spider that came in a bunch of bananas. She lingered for a short time after the bite according to her grandaughter Ora (Clevenger) Kinney.
