    Wiley Jackson Brickey is an American Hero, he was awarded a posthumous Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in 1933.

    In August 1899, Lt. Goddard and 36 men from Blount County left Maryville for Camp Mead, Pennsylvania to join Co. "H" of the 47th Voluntary Infantry. They reached the Philippines by way of the Suez Canal, and had their first engagement in January 1900.

    The men from Blount County gave an excellent account of themselves. It was the custom to put the largest men in front of the columns in marching. Both sets of four were from Blount County. Frank Burns was a corporal of the squad composed of Perry and William Weagley, D.L. "Fate" Brickey, Roscoe Cochran, Richard Burns, Charles Childress and Tom Jenkins. The Blount contingent furnished the crack scouts, Eagle Rose, Perry Weagley, Frank Burns, Richard Burns, Fate Brickey and Charles Childress are often mentioned in the scouting reports.

    The files of the Maryville Times from August 1898 until the return of these men, has a full account of the activities of the group in the letters to the editor from Lt. Goddard and Stg. W.J. Brickey.

    Of the 36 men who went from Blount County to the Philippines, two were killed (Stg. Wiley J. Brickey and Sgt. Frank W. Burns), and 8 were wounded.
