Peter Shults was bushwhacked by bandits and died as a result of his wounds. His sons, James Madison and Edmund Achols avenged his death (but that's another story). His grave is the second oldest one in the historic Maxdale (TX) cemetery.
The Valentine Shults family moved to Rhea County, TN shortly after Peter's birth. In 1819, the family moved to Bibb County, AL. Peter married Charlotte O. Yeager on 8/6/1828 and they raised 12 children there. Some time after Valentine's death in Perry County, AL, Peter Shults was the last of the family to leave Bibb County, as his brothers and sisters moved on to Arkansas and Texas. Selling their land in Bibb County in 1859, Peter and Charlotte moved to Ft. Worth, TX, where he was in the cattle and freight business.
