BRITTON, CARL REECE - age 76 of Maryville, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home. He was a member of Monte Vista Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Navy and a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the U.S. Army. Following World War II, Mr. Britton conducted military funerals for those who gave their lives for their country. He had been a member of New Providence Masonic Lodge #128 F&AM since April 30, 1946. For many years, he coordinated the Blount County Law Enforcement Officer's Day breakfast honoring officers in Maryville, Alcoa and Blount County. He conducted his own prison ministry in which he counseled short-term prisoners. He was responsible for the Korean Conflict Monument which honored those who served from Blount County and is now on display at the National Guard Armory. He was in the banking industry for over 40 years in different areas of the southeast. Previous to his death, he was involved in the coordination of services and a website for the visually impaired. Mr. Britton was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Bessie Cochran Britton; daughter, Linda Melton; grandsons, Jeffrey Woodard and Brian Melton; sister, Ruth Britton Chambers. Survivors include : wife, Laverne H. Britton; daughters and sons in law, Barbara and Hal Bierce of Marietta, Ga., Carla and Richard Woodard, Lisa and Mike Rule, and son in law, Jim Melton all of Maryville; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brother, A.B. Britton of Maryville; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grandview Cemetery for a graveside service with Rev. Jerry Mantooth officiating. Full military honors will be provided for not only his service to our country but also for the patriotism he has shown in his daily life. Friends may call at their convenience at the family home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Maryville High School Library, 825 Lawrence Ave. Maryville,Tenn. 37803 or to the United Leukodystrophy Association.
