Time to leap into March and celebrate along the way

Four women are usually found working at the Douglas Cherokee Neighborhood Center located at 353 Driskill Circle. They are, from left, Vella Calfee, outreach assistant; Joanne Morse, outreach worker; Peggy Brown, outreach assistant; and center coordinator Pat Spurgeon. The center provides a variety of services for those in need such as low income and homeless or just "down and out" on their luck.

By noon on Thursday it was already 70 degrees after heavy rains during the night around our hometown, as we wonder what weather the remaining days of February might bring.
While trying to find Leap Year babies, as I celebrate this Wednesday, February 29, after a four-year dearth of birthdays, something told me to call June Finchum. Yes, I was mistaken that she was born on Leap Year day. I did find out she still enjoys working part-time with Kim Derrick at Taste of Tennessee located in Sevier County off Highway 411. You recall she worked for decades at National Bank of Tennessee. She is still glad to help customers but with good food instead of money. I also confirmed that Hal Derrick, who is a co-owner of the restaurant, is extremely ill. Then, I recalled an old note from Reathel Campbell, who works at Cracker Barrel. Her husband, A. J. Campbell, a cousin to our late press operator Harold Campbell, celebrates his 64th birthday on Feb. 29. Some of you may have worked with him at BASF before he retired. Their daughter is Reathel Ann who works at Newport Federal. It just so happened after chatting with Vonn Ray Murrell on Thurs. that he just missed being a Leap Year kid. He turns 74 on March 1 and we chatted some on the early years of Electro-Voice, and he told me Rich Lloyd also shares the same birth date. I will be writing soon about a sad passing of a woman who will not be here to celebrate in late March so be watching for this poignant story.
Before moving along to the next interesting people you and I both know well, let me say a few final words about our visit to Jewelry Connection and chat with Mary Pitner and Rhonda Evans. You learned she is married to roofer Ricky Evans, who will be busy patching all those leaky roofs discovered after the late February storms. Ricky's Dad was "Wormy" Evans who was married to the former Audra Burgin of the Wolf Creek Burgin clan. She died in 1985, and Wormy contracted pneumonia and died in 1989. Ricky and brother Rod have been roofing together for over 40 years and at age 52, Ricky said it's time to slow down and stay off too many steep roofs.
Don't you miss the Walmart greeters?
Those who shop in Walmart will have noticed the traditional greeters are gone. You heard the story many weeks ago of the retail giant's plans to change this. I found out first hand on a typical rainy day and walked in to find all the buggies and their handles wet. Greeters were often seen drying these and preparing them for the next shopper. Inside just past the checkout counters I did bump into a familiar face who often smiled and greeted me. He told me the store is still using some former greeters in these new back-away-from-the-door positions. I commented how do you catch shoplifters so far away or point customers in the right direction?
Talk about a new look. While hanging out in a favorite spot from the 1970s at the courthouse doors next to the sheriff's department, I opened the door for a tall, deputy who had his hands full. He greeted me by name so I had to ask his, because my old memory doesn't match his young one. If he had all his weight back, I would have recognized Deputy Andy Tritt. Last year he went on a truly crash diet because he approached nearly 500 pounds. He dropped down to a healthy 250 pounds today. I'm hoping he will talk with me to tell how this happened that he might help others struggling to lose huge amounts of weight.
Welcome to our neighborhood
Some welcome customers walked into my office early last week not for a good reason, but poor newspaper delivery. Yet, it did give me a chance to know more about Vella Calfee and Pat Spurgeon. They work at the Douglas Cherokee Neighborhood Center located off Driskill Circle in the Newport Housing Authority community.
