Benefit wrestling set for wreck victim
Author: Duay O'Neil
COSBY-A benefit to raise money to help with the medical expenses of an 84-year-old Newport woman, who was critically injured in a wreck on February 18, is set for Saturday, May 22, at Cosby High School.
TEW Wrestling will bring five matches to the school to help raise money for Dorothy Vera (Norwood) "Mamaw" Rice, who suffered numerous injuries in the accident.
According to Rice's daughter Genie, her mother's GEO was struck by an SUV as she attempted to pull onto Hwy. 321 from the entrance to Wal-Mart.
"Witnesses told us Mama had the right-of-way," said Rice. "The SUV ran a red light, smashed her GEO and just t-boned it. The wreck was not her fault."
The victim sustained a broken neck, seven broken ribs, two broken collar bones, two fractures to her pelvis, and a broken leg.
Initially she was flown to UT Hospital and then spent over a month at Select Specialty at St. Mary's. She is now a patient at Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center.
"Her insurance has run out," said Rice. "She has a tracheotomy and a feeding tube."
Vera Rice is well-known for her many years of work as a substitute teacher at Edgemont Elementary School and for the years she spent there as a foster grandparent for grades 1-3, helping children with remedial reading.
She also enjoyed her regular visits to the Cocke County Senior Center Quilters. "She has volunteered all over Cocke County," said her daughter.
Preceding the wrestling bouts, an auction will begin at 6 p.m. Donations of auction items are welcome.
The wrestling bouts will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person with children under 5 being admitted free.
