Mary Josephine Taylor Ford, age 90, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2004, at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville.
She had been in declining health for several years. Born May 6, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Hunter Taylor and Janie Chilton Taylor and had one brother, Hugh Taylor.
She was also preceded in death by husband, Dr. Hobart Ford, local dentist and state representative for many years for Cocke, Jefferson, and Sevier counties.
Mrs. Ford was a life-long resident of Newport, and a descendant of East Tennessee pioneers including Isaac White, an officer at the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina, and Parmenas Taylor, appointed by President Washington to the upper council of the Territory South of the River Ohio.
Mrs. Ford attended Salem College, Winston Salem, North Carolina. Together with her brother, Hugh Taylor, Mrs. Ford owned Taylor Grocery Co., Newport, a wholesale grocery business formed by her grandfather, Hugh L.W. Taylor.
She enjoyed membership in the First United Methodist Church of Newport, and was a charter member of the Clifton Club.
Her life’s interest focused on family, gardening, and she was an avid reader.
In her children’s younger years, Mrs. Ford assisted in innumerable school, athletic games, and special events, as well as being a strong supporter of husband’s athletic endeavors; Dr. Ford initiated and managed Newport’s Connie Mack League and owned the Knoxville Smokies baseball team for a number of years.
Mrs. Ford is survived by a son, Alfred Taylor “Butch” Ford, and wife, Mary; son, Dr. Hobart “Toby” Ford Jr. and wife, Beauanne, all of Newport; step-grandchildren, Jerry Whitehead and wife, Audry, of Blue Ridge, Ga.; Gwendia Lawson, Clydene Styles, Tammy and husband, Donald “Jabo” Francis, all of Newport.
Granddaughter, Kirsten Ford Thomas and husband, William, of Dublin, Ohio; and grandsons, Isaac Hunter Ford, of Newport, and Hobart Beau Ford and wife, Tonia, of Knoxville; great-grandsons, William and Jonathan Thomas, of Dublin, Ohio; nephews, Thomas H. Taylor and wife, Suja, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Hugh P. Taylor, of White Pine.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at Manes Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service in Union Cemetery, with the Rev. Freddrick Long officiating.
