Eula Clement Stokely, World War II army nurse, dies at 92
NEWPORT---Eula Clement Stokley, who served as a United States Army nurse in Japan during World War II, died Monday, September 1, in Morristown-Hamblen Hospital following a period of declining health.
She was born July 11, 1916, in the Grainger County community of Thorn Hill, one of five children of Lillard Clement and his wife, the former Louisa Dalton. After her father's early death, her mother re-married and had three more children. Mrs. Stokely's early years were spent on the family's farm.
Eventually she earned her nursing degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing and came to Cocke County as one of its first public health nurses. At the time, Cocke County's Health Department was located in an office in the courthouse.
After leaving her work here to serve her country as an Army nurse, she returned to Cocke County and initially did private nursing. It was while she served as nurse to Jessie (O'Neil) Lee that she met her future husband, Benjamin Dickerson Stokely.
After a brief courtship, the couple married in 1948 and later became the parents of three children: Janie Mae, Ben, and Lowell.
She returned to work as a Cocke County Health Department nurse in the mid-1960s. By this time, the department had moved to its present College Street location.
During her absence, the system's work had greatly changed, and Mrs. Stokely had to learn many new procedures and rules.
Quickly adapting to the new processes, she began a career which included responsibilities for assigned sections of the county. Among her many duties were making home visits, administering immunizations, caring for TB patients, and performing sight and hearing screenings in local schools.
"She was a joy to work with," recalled former co-worker Lynne Smith.
Mrs. Stokely retired in 1986 at age 70.
As her children matured, she became active in their activities. For many years she served as an adult leader in Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, and Girl Scouts.
She was a longtime member of the Newport Clifton Club and worked diligently on the group's publication of the book "Newport."
Gardening was among her many interests, and as long as her health permitted, she took great joy in growing both vegetables and flowers, which she shared with family and friends.
She was also a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Newport.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter.
Her survivors include her two sons, one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside services are scheduled at noon Wednesday, September 3, in Union Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Gorrell officiating.
