- Born near Mt. Carmel.
John W. Mitchell graduated from Maryville College with an A. B. degree in 1904,
then took graduate courses in mathematics at the University of Chicago before
he joined the faculty of Texas A. and M. University in 1907. He taught there
for 38 years; at the time of his death he was Professor of Mathematics and had
served for a time as Acting Chairman of that department. He was fond of sports
and an execellent tennis player.
