LONG, KATHERINE "TAY" WARD - age 64, of Mosheim, TN, passed away at Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, following a protracted struggle to overcome a series of illnesses beginning with breast cancer and ultimately leukemia resulting from the chemotherapy therapy taken in an effort to prevent recurrence of the malignancy. Attempts to locate a matching stem cell donor for a bone marrow transplant were unsuccessful at Mayo Clinic. A clinical trial at the cord blood transplant clinic at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis was then planned; but the trial was canceled. During her more than two decades with UT Extension, Katherine worked in Sullivan, Cocke, and Wayne Counties in a wide variety of Extension activities. Her roots in UT Extension were established as early as her high school when she won a statewide 4-H Championship in poultry. Some of Katherine's favorite activities included working with youth and young adults through programs and trips that would further their knowledge of farming and related activities. Katherine found great joy in serving God through her church. She was a devoted member and lay leader of Mosheim Central United Methodist Church. Her contributions included leading worship, teaching Sunday school and participating in many other programs of the church's ministry. Dave and Katherine hosted many foreign exchange students from countries to include: Denmark, Germany, Bolivia, Panama, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, China, and Mexico. Katherine was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was especially loved by her family and close friends, who will miss her dearly and will carry on her memories and traditions. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dave Long; two children, Capt. Jon David Long, an Air Force RN, and Suzanne Metcalf, an accountant who lives in Nashville and son-in-law, Mark Metcalf, a Mechanical Engineer. Katherine and Dave have one granddaughter, 19 month old Anna Mae Metcalf. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday at Mosheim Central United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Carter's Station Cemetery at Albany.
