Sally Gwendolyn Shelton passed away on Monday, November 14, 2005, after illness due to cancer. Sally was an employee of Bush Brothers and Company for 18 years and retired on October 13, 2005. She was very proud of her time with Bush Brothers and had many friends from the company who were a great inspiration to her during her illness. She spoke fondly of her job and wonderful friends at this wonderful company. Sally attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1961; Sally looked forward to each class reunion. Sally was a member of First Christian Church, Newport, since age 13. She was a member of the Friendly Workers Sunday School Class and also a part-time teacher until her illness in June, 2005.
Sally was preceded in death by her son, Eric Wayne McCoig, on April 14, 1999.
Sally is survived by a son, William Todd Allen; daughter-in-law, Sandi Allen; and two granddaughters, Kari Todd and Erica Allen, of Newport; parents, Reed and Lenola G. Vassar; brothers and sisters-in-law, Reed J. and Brenda M. Vassar, Michael and Vicki Vassar, and Richard D. and Cindi Vassar, all of Newport; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Harold Wright, of Pigeon Forge; and sisters, Marguerite Vassar, of Knoxville, and Betsy J. Huff, of Knoxville.
Sally is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews who she loved very much.
Graveside funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Union Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Gorrell officiating.
Family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Manes Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Christian Church of Newport, where she attended, or to St. Jude Hospital.
Her brothers and nephews will be serving as pallbearers.
