School Days 2!
Edwina School in the early 1900s
Although damaged, this pho- to shows a good portion of Edwina School. Taken about 1905, the picture shows a portion of the students gathered outside the build- ing. The school stood in the vicinity of today’s Forestry Service headquarters.
Edwina School served community well for many years
At least three and quite possibly more schools served the children living in the Edwina communi- ty, beginning in the 1800s and continuing until the school’s consolidation into present-day Bridgeport School in the early 1960s. The schools stood in the general vicinity of today’s forestry service headquar- ters. At one time, students could complete two years of high school work at this school in the days before any Cocke County school offered a complete four- year plan of high school work. Many of the children attending Edwina School were members of the Man- tooth, Fox, Netherton, Sisk, Gray, and Wood fam- ilies, early settlers in the region.
Nannie (Gray) Hale, now over 100 years old, well recalls her ? rst day of school at Edwina when her father, Robert Gray, mounted the steps, holding the hands of Nannie and her brother, the late Otto Gray. Mr. Gray greeted the teacher by nodding at Otto and saying, “This one won’t give you any trou- ble,” then gestured down at Nannie and said, “But you’d better keep your eye on her.”
