Mr. Thad Garver, age 88, of Cosby, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Tennova Residential Hospice in Knoxville.
He was a member of Garver’s Chapel Church but was unable to attend due to his declining health.
He was a United States Navy veteran and served during World War II.
He retired from General Motors in Parma, Ohio, after twenty-eight years of service.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra Garver, sisters Eva Lou Hoaglan, Ola V. Phillips, Joyce Parton, and Nina B. Phillips, half-sister Bertha Williamson, and brothers Floyd Garver and Walt Garver.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years Velma Garver of Cosby, daughters Roella (Allan) Linebarger of Parrottsville, who, for the last several years, were his caregivers; Helen Steele, Shirley Lightner, Nancy (Gary) Howell, and Tammye (Dean) Allen, all of Cleveland, OH; sister Jettie McKeehan; his brother, who was like a son, Phillip (Loretta) Garver and half-brother Lem (Tank) Garver; grandchildren Rechelle (Steve) Surrett, Christopher (Amber) Lightner, Tina (Ralph) James, Carrie Howell, Boog (Terri) Howell, Daryl (April) Jenkins; step-granddaughter Wendy (Kip) Conner; JR (Virginia) Allen, Bobby (Sarah) Allen, Gary Allen and special grandson Ronnie (Carrie) Allen; great-grandchildren Rachel, Robin, Rebecca, Michael, Stevie, Kitty, Garrett, Bryce, Caleigh, Maxx, Hannah, Jayden,; step-great-grandchildren Adison and Benji, and special great-granddaughter Ashtyn.
There are a host of nieces and nephews, including special nieces Tammy Ford and Winnie Brown and special nephews Tony Phillips, Sam Phillips, Alvin Ford, Hoody Parton, and Benjie Evans. Additional survivors include an abundance of friends at Wilsonville Baptist Church, especially 'Daughter' Louise Holt, Wanda Lamb, and Steve and Jackie Blanchard.
Special thanks to all at Smoky Mountain Hospice, Charlie Grooms, Megan Gregg, Ron Carrell, and Debbie Williams, sitters Mandy Smelcer and Judy Messer, and to Tennova Residential Hospice.
The funeral service will be held Thursday evening, February 6, 2014, at Wilsonville Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Blanchard and Rev. Ron Carrell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00—7:00 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Friday morning, February 7, 2014, at Union Cemetery for the 11:00 a.m. interment. Grandsons and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by The East Tennessee Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.
