BALCH, CHARLES D., JR. - passed away Thursday morning, November 30, 2000, at Life Care Center of Jefferson City. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson City and was retired from Appalachian Electric Cooperative in 1989, after serving 22 years as general manager. In 1990, he was named the first Jefferson Countian of the Year by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Balch was raised in Cocke County. Tenn., served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, and graduated from the University of Tennessee. In 1951, he and his wife, Anne Ellison moved to Jefferson City, where they raised their three children. In 1979, he married Ann L. McMahan, who has become a beloved member of the Balch family. Mr. Balch was a 47-year member of the Lions Club and spent countless hours working on their Sight Conservation and Food Basket Programs. In 1991, he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, a national honor given to Lions who have offered exceptional service and leadership. Lions Club District 12-N also named him Lion of the Decade for 1983-1992. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles D. and Emma Balch and wife, Anne E. Balch.
He leaves his wife, Ann L. Balch; children, Carolyn Berryhill and her husband Doug, Thad Balch and his wife Nancy, and Jane Mayfield; grandchildren, Ellison Berryhill, Nathan and Jennifer Balch, Taylor Mayfield, Brandi and Dewayne England, and Dewayne and Lisa Daniel; five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews in Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2, at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City with Rev. Stuart Albee and Rev. Andy Ferguson officiating, with friends received immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Family and friends will meet at 2:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Union Cemetery in Newport for a 3 p.m. graveside service. Memorial gifts may be made to the building fund at First United Methodist Church, 2011 Branner Avenue, Jefferson City, TN 37760 or to the Jefferson City Lions Club, c/o Carl Taylor, 1901 Lakeview Avenue, Jefferson City, TN 37760.
