Mr. Johnny Jay Will “Keg” Taylor, age 64, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee, in Knoxville, after struggling with a lengthy illness.
Johnny was born in Newport and had lived here his entire life.
Johnny was a well-known and well-liked businessman in the Newport community. His civic service began in the 1960s when he served Newport as a police officer. From this background in law enforcement, he became a charter member of the F.O.P., the Fraternal Order of Police. While still a member of the F.O.P., Johnny was currently serving as Constable for the Sixth District in Newport, a position he has held for several years. In years past, he served several terms as a member of the Police Civil Service Board in Newport.
Probably the proudest of Johnny’s accomplishments was his place on the Newport Utilities Board of Administrators. He became a board member in 1979 and was known for being an advocate for the employees of the Newport Utilities. His 22 years of service to NUB make him the board member with the longest term in the history of Newport Utilities. He took special pride in his NUB career because of strong family ties to NUB; both his brother and his father had served for the utility company.
He was preceded in death by his father, Murray Taylor; brother, Cecil “Buddy” Taylor; infant brother, Jack Taylor; and nephew, Robert Franklin Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Maxine, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Scott Large, of Newport; mother, Viola Taylor Boley, of Newport; brother, Fred Taylor, of Nashville; nephew, Terry Taylor, of Newport; nieces, Sharon Manning, of Sevierville, and Susan Taylor, of Nashville; great-nephews, Nathan and Taylor Manning, of Sevierville; special friends, Herb and Sharon Keller, of Newport, and many more close friends.
Funeral service will be held at 8 p.m., Friday, May 25, 2001, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2001, for the 11 a.m. entombment at Resthaven Mausoleum.
Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, May 25, 2001, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements by Costner-Maloy.
