Richard Valentine of 4751 Hooper H-way is seeking re-election to the position of constable for the 5th District.
"I have been in law enforcement for 25 years as a constable and reserve deputy," he said. "I enjoy helping and talking to the people in the Cosby area. I will try to slow down speeding and to protect the homes and businesses in my district.
"I would appreciate your vote and support in the Aug. 3 election.
Valentine is the son of Lee and Arlene Valentine and has one son, Richard Lee Valentine. He has been a member of the Tennessee Constable Association for the past eight years.
He began as a reserve deputy under Sheriff Bobby Stinson and began patrolling the communities.
Valentine worked in Gatlinburg in the hospitality industry for many years but health reasons caused him to retire.
He attended Cosby High School and served in Korea and Vietnam, serving seven years in the army/construction engineers.
Valentine loves to fish and camp with his father, Lee, who is 86.

Cosby Constable suffers heart attack

Cosby Constable Richard Valentine suffered a heart attack Friday afternoon and is listed in critical condition at a Johnson City Hospital at press time.
According to sheriff’s officers, Valentine suffered the while in his car and attempted to get to the Fire Department in Cosby. But he was unable to get to the fire department and drove his car into a ditch. He was found slumped over the steering wheel after firemen heard the horn on his car blaring.
He was taken by helicopter to Johnson City for treatment.

Constable Valentine dies of heart attack

Cosby Fifth District Constable Richard Lee Valentine died after suffering a heart attack on May 18, while driving near the volunteer fire dept. Constable Valentine, 60, died on Monday morning at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was driving near the Cosby School when he suffered the attack. Firefighters at the Cosby VFD heard the horn on his car blaring, and they went to aid him. The car had gone into a ditchline.
One of four children of Lee and Arlene Valentine, he was raised on Cosby and attended Cosby School.
He entered the Army during the Vietnam War and served a tour of duty and completed seven years of active service.
When he returned to Cocke County, he went to work for Alcoa. Then he joined the National Park Service and worked in the Great Smokies National Park. For many years under various sheriffs he served as a reserve deputy, because he had a keen interest in law enforcement.
He currently served as the on-site county official supervising law enforcement and safety for Pigeon River rafters at Hartford and Waterville.
Constable Valentine was known as a man who would help anyone in need and worked many hours to keep citizens safer.
He is also survived by a son, Ricky, and brothers: Delmar Williamson and Lacy Valentine. Richard was the oldest of the four children.
His brother, Troy Dale Valentine, was a security guard at Rocky Top Motel when he was killed along with the night clerk many years ago.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Costner-Maloy Funeral Home.

Mr. Richard Valentine, 60, of Cosby, passed away Monday, May 28, 2007, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Valentine was employed by Cocke County as a River Officer and was an elected Cocke County Constable, serving the fifth district in Cosby. He was a member of Smoky Mountain Full Gospel Church. Mr. Valentine was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Tennessee Constables Association. He was preceded in death by his brother, Troy Dale Valentine; grandparents, Lloyd and Fannie Valentine; grandmother, Lillie Mae Williamson; and grandfather, Lonzo Valentine. Survivors include his son, Richard Lee Valentine, of Cosby; parents, Lee and Arlene Valentine, of Cosby; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lacy and Emma Valentine, of Cosby, and Delmar and Patricia Williamson, of Newport; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2007, at Allen’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Hall and Rev. Joe Cureton officiating. The casket will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church, prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Valentine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home. Arrangements by Costner-Maloy.
