A well-known teacher in the early 1900s was Miss Bernice Brooks. Born 18 July 1896, she was a daughter of Joel and Elizabeth (Click) Brooks, who lived in the Bat Harbor community of Cocke County. Teaching was “in the blood” of Miss Brooks’ family. Two of her sisters, Vera Brooks Winter and Josephine Brooks, and one brother, Paul Brooks, also taught school. After teaching for 18 years, Miss Brooks retired to raise her two nieces, Betty Jo and Nancy Ruth Winter, and nephew, Harold Brooks, after the deaths of their mothers. She lived to be over 100 years old. In her later years, she devoted much of her time to recording her family and community’s histories. She also wrote poetry, including tributes to every school she taught. These poems are now treasured by her family. The first poem describes the almost-primitive conditions teachers in the early 1900s faced as they entered the classroom.
