NEWPORT-As part of honoring all veterans, Cocke County's Vietnam veterans finally got an official "welcome home" Sunday as part of the Second Annual Showcase on the River Festival.
The ceremony opened with veterans marching from the Courthouse Annex to the stage area at the festival. After a welcome from Trustee and Iraq War veteran Rob Mathis, who served as emcee, Cocke County High School Navy Junior ROTC members presented colors and Miss Northeast Tennessee, Sarah Stokely, sang the National Anthem.
Guest speaker, Lt. Gen. Hubert Smith, read a proclamation from the City of Newport and presented it to Veteran Wayne Ball.
Ball said, "Some lost a little, some lost a lot. The families, on behalf of those here in this position today, it's an honor for me. But, we all served and, to me, we're all heroes. If you've ever been in a combat zone, you'll never forget it...not until the day you die. It just something you can't explain. But, through God's love, gift and grace we made it home, some of us in better shape than others."
A table was set up to remember those who were either killed, missing in action or prisoners of war. Mathis revealed the meaning of the empty table and each item in honor those who never came home.
Smith opened his remarks by saying, "The people of this part of the country are special. I want to thank you, the government, officials and businesses who helped put this on.
