When Bill Bowers came in to claim his $50 check, it gave me a chance to chat with him about the Bowers family, because I recalled Newport's Mack "Buddy" Bowers. Bill hails from the Houston Valley area just inside the Greene County line. He married Roy D. Brown's sister, Beulah Brown, who retired as a cook from the Cocke County school system. Bill had worked for 47 years for Magnavox and retired in 2001-shortly before the plant shut down. He recalled many local people from the plant years, including the late Hubert Gray. I asked Bill how he occupies his time, and he said that gardening, lawn, and house maintenance kept him busy in Newport and at the Greene Co. homeplace. He lives off Jones Street in Newport. You may know their children: Kathy Grooms, who is with Smoky Mountain Home Health and married to principal Shannon Grooms; and Russell, a printing plant supervisor in Charlotte, NC. Bill recalled the quiet years growing up in the mountain community at Houston Valley where the old R.B. Shipley store building still stands. His mother was a Presley and was married to Dan Fields. Some of you retired moonshiners may recall that he was a revenue agent. Later, he became an attorney and defended some of the same people he probably arrested.
