James Darrell Pickel, age 84 of Pigeon Forge, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008 of congestive heart failure at Mountain Home Veterans Hospital in Johnson City. He was the owner of Pickel’s Shell Service Station in Pigeon Forge for over 40 years. He enjoyed spending time with friends and telling stories of past events in his life.
Darrell was a Navy veteran of World War II and received a bronze star for saving the lives of 62 fellow sailors when his watchful eye and quick action prevented an enemy suicide mission from blowing up his ship.
Mr. Pickel was preceded in death by his father Sam Pickel; mother Nancy Ogle Pickel; brothers C.A., Robert, Sam, Jr., Carl and Dee Pickel; sisters Bonnie Clabo, Kathryn Patten, Annabell Green, Marydell McConnell.

Funeral service 4 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet 11 AM Monday in Asbury Cemetery in Knoxville for interment. The family will receive friends 2-4 PM Sunday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
