He graduated from Carson-Newman College, was a World War II veteran, a charter member of Alcoa Volunteer Fire Department, retired as Fire Marshall from the Aluminum Company of America, former Blount County Civil Defense Director, former Mayor and Councilman of Alcoa, former member of the State of Tennessee EMS Board, commander of American Legion Post #13 of Maryville, member of West Point Parents Club of East Tennessee, Unita Masonic Lodge #295, York Ritemason, Shriners Kerbela Temple. He was preceded in death by: parents, Rev. Jerome and Bess (Mize) Hicks ; brother, Hugh Hicks . Survivors: wife, Irene Atchley Hicks ; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Jerry Lemler of Speedwell, Tenn.; granddaughter, Jessica Lemler of Alcoa; grandson, Russell Paul Lemler of West Point; stepchildren, Joyce Lane and son, Dylan of Houston, Texas, Joey Atchley and wife, Tracy and sons, Jordan, Evan and David; sisters-in-law, Nell Hicks of Tampa, Fla., Marilyn and husband, William Johnson of Maryville; nieces, Cathy Rio of Tampa, Fla., Judy Kelly of Washington State; nephew, Ronnie Hicks of Washington, D.C.; special friend and nephew, Edward Gilbert of Maryville. Funeral services are at 8 p.m., Sunday, February 7, 1999, at Alcoa First United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Green and Rev. Ken Green officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m., Monday, February 8, 1999, in Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Paul Hicks Baseball Field, c/o Roger Lowe, American Legion Post #13, 224 Water Road, Maryville, TN 37803.
