Eugene "Gene" Henderson, age 81 of Sevierville, passed away peacefully following a lengthy illness on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Irene Henderson; former wife, Maxine Ogle Henderson; and step-son, Stanley Smith and wife Debbie.
Gene was born on Burden Hill and grew up in the McMahan Addition of Sevierville. He graduated from Sevier County High School in 1954 and entered the Army, serving six years in Niagara Falls, Malibu Beach and Germany.
He learned to ski in Germany and volunteered to serve on the first National Ski Patrol at Ober Gatlinburg when he returned to Sevier County. He was awarded Employee Volunteer of the Year by the international company Rohm and Haas, where he worked in Knoxville for over 35 years. He continued many volunteer activities into his retirement years. One of his favorites was Special Olympics which holds their State Games at Ober each year for persons with developmental disabilities. Douglas Cooperative also received a cash reward as part of his award.
He was also an active volunteer at First Baptist Church, Sevierville in the Prayer Ministry and mission trips. He was Trip Coordinator for the Smoky Mountain Ski Club and enjoyed traveling, hiking, water skiing, tennis, and chatting with the tourists. He made lifelong friends of some of them. He enjoyed the many restaurants and entertainment available in Sevier County. He was very proud of his hometown which included the whole County. He lived in Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Kodak and Douglas Lake at various times.
One of his concerns was the deplorable condition of an historic treasure in Sevier County, New Salem Baptist Church on Eastgate Road. It is a significant landmark in Sevier County's African -American community and it is on the endangered Heritage. Another grant proposal for renovation has just been submitted but it requires a considerable cash match in hand and additional funding. The land for the church was donated by Gene's great-grandfather, Squire Robert Henderson. He also allowed Isaac Dockery to use adjacent land to build a brick kiln next to the church site. Gene requested that donations for this cause be considered in lieu of flowers.
