Seymour woman 'canning' wealth of Sevier fair wins
By: CANDICE GRIMM, Staff Writer September 10, 2005
She's only 90, but Ethel Mize of Seymour has been entering her canned foods, baked goods, cut flowers and potted plants in the Sevier County Fair for 18 years.
Mize said she had never thought of entering anything in the fair, but began doing so after her sister, who wanted to enter some paintings, asked her to go along with her.
"She wanted me to go with her, so I brought stuff too," said Mize, reminiscing that she won nine ribbons that first year.
"I didn't know what I was doing, I was just testing the water to see what was going on," said Mize.
Eighteen years later, Mize is still at it, and said, "I look forward to the fair each year - it's a good hobby."
While all the canning and baking is now a hobby for Mize, she said she has "always canned and gardened. I'm a farmer's wife, and I've always lived on the farm."
Though she loves to can, Mize said, "I can to give it away - I can't eat all that stuff."
In order to enter the fair, Mize's daughter Janelle Cross of Bristol, Tn., helps her mother get all her entries to the fair and spends the entire week of the fair with her mother. But, that is the extent of their collaboration.
"We enter the same things and try to outdo each other. ... Usually we run neck and neck on things," said Mize. "Last year I beat her, this year, I think she has more ribbons."
In all the years that Mize has been entering items in the fair, she said her goal was to win more than 100 ribbons in a single year, and she met that goal in 2004.
According to Cross, during just the past 10 years her mother has had over 1,000 entries in the fair and won over 700 ribbons. Mize, however, said she is pleased whether her items win first, second, or third place.
This year, Mize entered a total of 122 items, including 60 jars of canned foods, 15 potted plants, six pies, and candy and cookies.
"Last week I told the canned goods, 'Do you know how sick I am of you?' They didn't answer but I felt better," said Mize, adding that another daughter, who lives in the area, doesn't can, but, "she helps carry it in (from the garden)."
In this year's competition, Mize entered: 22 cut flowers and won 17 ribbons; 15 potted plants and won 13 ribbons; six fruit pies and won six ribbons; 20 baked goods and won 12 ribbons; and was having a difficult time counting all of the ribbons she had won with her 60 jars of canned foods.
Mize also won two Ball Awards from the Ball Canning Company, which gives a blue ribbon to the first and second place canning award winners to promote the art of home canning and honor adults who can. The Ball Awards when to her entries for canned pickles and fruit.

Happy 100th
JASON DAVIS
Ethel Mize, a lifelong Sevier County native and current resident of Dominion Senior Living in Sevierville, celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday, surrounded by friends, family and fellow members of Knob Creek Baptist Church. Mize, who was born near Gatlinburg but lived most of her life in the Seymour community, was presented a certificate of congratulations from Sen. Doug Overbey, and received a visit from Rep. Dale Carr. Four of Mize's five children — Glenn Mize, Norman Mize, Lela Wilson and Janelle Cross — were present for the gathering. Another daughter, Marilyn Tolbert of S.C., could not attend. "I appreciate it," Mize said of the celebration. "In a way, I don't appreciate all this attention — but with all the trouble they've gone through, you've got to go along and appreciate it ... they treated me like a queen."
