James Hugh Ogle, age 84 of Gatlinburg, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017. Hugh was born in Roaring Fork and attended First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg where he was a Deacon for many years.
He was a proud Army veteran. Hugh was an Architect by profession and with his mentor and business partner Hubert Bebb co-founded Community Tectonics Architectural Firm where he had a long and distinguished career designing many custom homes, schools and churches, including his home church, First Baptist of Gatlinburg and was proud that Community Tectonics was chosen to design the SunSphere for the 1982 World's Fair. Hugh was also an entrepreneur, and as partner in Huff and Ogle Enterprises had many local and regional restaurants as well as Mt. LeConte Lodge and Charit Creek Lodge. Hugh also owned, designed, and built some of the first overnight rentals and apartment buildings in Gatlinburg. Hugh loved the outdoors, fishing, hiking, and golf were his favorites. He was proudly involved with The Sevierville County Food Ministry, as a volunteer and later as a member of the steering committee, board of directors, designer of the new building and continued to draw long after retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Estel and Blanche Ogle;
His loving wife of 47 years, Barbara Trentham Ogle; and infant son Dennis Mitchell Ogle.
He is survived by his Daughter: Janet Newman and husband, John; Grandson: Garrett Newman;

'Burg loses influential architect
By JULI WATSON NEIL
Hugh Ogle
GATLINBURG -- It's not every volunteer who could redesign a building - and design the redesign work so that the normal business conducted in the building continued without interruption. The nonprofit fortunate to have such a volunteer was Sevier County Food Ministries, and James Hugh Ogle was a Monday regular there for several years. He was also a noted architect and co-founder of the firm responsible for many iconic structures, such as the Sunsphere in Knoxville. The Gatlinburg resident passed away on June 11 at the age of 84.
Dorothy Johnson estimated she had pulled Monday morning duty at the food ministry alongside Ogle for about a decade. "He was a very dedicated volunteer at the Sevier County Food Ministries," said the chair of the nonprofit's board of directors. "He's never missed a day. He's always there every Monday." Johnson said that Ogle had also served on the nonprofit's board and had volunteered as the assistant treasurer.
Before Ogle redesigned the food pantry's building, which is in Sevierville near the fairgrounds on Old Knoxville Highway, Johnson said that staffers and volunteers had to make at least two or three trips to the grocery store each week.
"It was his foresight," Johnson said of Ogle's recognition that the nonprofit needed more - and better use of - its space. "When we added the warehouse, he redesigned the whole food ministry," she said. "He designed the offices. He designed the interview rooms. Before that, everybody was in one big room.
"When we were adding the warehouse onto what was there," Johnson continued, "he wanted to make sure we never had to close during remodeling." She said the food ministry's building was redesigned in 2012. "He did a fabulous job redesigning the building," said Johnson.
"He was a very dedicated Christian," Johnson said of her longtime fellow volunteer. "He loved helping people, but you didn't know it." She said that Ogle preferred to help others without recognition or fanfare.
One person that Ogle helped, possibly more than he realized, was Gatlinburg-based architect Thomas Trotter, Sr.
"I met Hugh Ogle in 1970 when I went to work at the architectural firm of Hubert Bebb Architect, James H. Ogle & Associates," said Trotter. "I look back on those days and know how blessed I was to have had that opportunity. I've never known two finer men than Hubert Bebb and Hugh Ogle. They were not just my employers, they were my mentors and friends.
"Hubert died in 1984," Trotter continued, "and I left two years later from what was by then Community Tectonics Inc. and started Trotter and Associates, Architect.
I owe a lifelong career to those two men and know that they had a positive effect on my life and many others with their great talents and friendships."
In addition to his work on the Sunsphere, Bebb was also known for designing the viewing tower at Clingmans Dome, the campus of Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and numerous commercial buildings and residences.
Ogle, in addition to his work as an architect, also developed many of Gatlinburg's first overnight rentals and apartment buildings. He was involved with businesses such as Huff and Ogle Enterprises, Charit Creek Lodge and Mount LeConte Lodge.
Larry Burcham, reverend at First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg, agreed with Johnson that Ogle was a steady part of the church. Ogle was a deacon who also served as an usher. "He did both services," Burcham said. "Twice on Sundays, with the early service at 8:45 a.m. That meant he was here by at least 8:15 a.m. He's one of the few people that saw just about everybody coming into church."
Burcham said that Ogle will be missed.
"Hugh was very caring," he said. "He was soft-spoken, kind, always easy to converse with." He noted that Ogle was involved with the design of the church, which is located on East Parkway in Gatlinburg. "We get lots of compliments," said Burcham. "Hugh did a really nice job."
A portion of the church, its multipurpose/youth building, was burned in the November 2016 fires that damaged or destroyed approximately 2,460 structures in Gatlinburg and other portions of Sevier County. "He was on that committee," he said of Ogle's involvement with the remodeling committee. "He made it to a couple of meetings before he got ill."
Burcham noted that this Sunday marks the 26th anniversary of the church holding services in the building that Ogle helped design. It will be difficult for members to not see Ogle greeting attendees at his usual place at the door. "There was a little girl talking about Hugh recently," said Burcham. "She thought he lived there (at the church)."
According to the obituary from Atchley Funeral Home, Ogle's family asked that any donations in his memory be made to Sevier County Food Ministries. The mailing address is P.O.Box 6042, Sevierville, TN 37864. Information is available at www.seviercountyfoodministries.org or 865-428-5182.
The family received friends, with a funeral service following, on June 15 at First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg. Online condolences can be left at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
