Mae Morris McCracken
Mae Morris McCracken, age 94, of Walking Horse Lane, Waynesville, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Four Seasons Hospice in Flat Rock, NC, after a period of declining health.
Born in the Webb’s Creek area of Sevier County, Tennessee, on March 1, 1917, Mae was the daughter of David P. and Flota Rogers Morris. She graduated from the Pittman Center Methodist Episcopal Mission School, Class of 1936, and was of the Methodist faith. While at Pittman, she was a member of the girls’ basketball team of which she kept many special memories. She came to Haywood County in 1937 where she met and in 1940 married Thomas Benton McCracken (Tommy) who died in 2000.
She was also preceded in death by seven brothers; Wilford Morris, Hayden Morris, Hugh Morris, Robert Morris, Joe Morris, Johnny Morris, and Clive Morris; and two sisters; Golden Proffitt and Etta Proffitt.
Mae is survived by her daughter, Donna McCracken, of Waynesville; her son, Robert (Bob) McCracken and his wife Carolyn of Clyde; two granddaughters, Cindy Bryant and her husband Eddie of Lake Junaluska, and Melissa Redditt of Clyde; and one great-grandchild, Tyler Redditt; as well as a special young friend, Heather Lee.
“Ms. Mae” loved growing roses and gardening and was known for her unending hospitality, kindness, and being a wonderful cook. Always the eternal optimist, she loved all people, animals, and Life, and was totally devoted to her family’s well-being and happiness.
In accordance with Mae’s wishes, private graveside services will be held.
A gathering of friends and visitation will be at 12 noon Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
