Resided in Gatlinburg, TN
Martha Jeanette Williams, age 93 of Gatlinburg, slipped peacefully away in her sleep as God called her home in the early morning of Monday, April 8, 2013.
She was related to most of the early pioneer families of the Smokies. She was a true mountain woman and insisted on having a wood stove for heating until her health declined a few years ago.
Her favorite pastime was reading and she read her Bible every day until her eyesight failed.
She was born in the Oldham's Creek community but spent part of her youth in North Georgia and Knoxville. She later returned to the Smokies where she spent the rest of her years.
She taught school briefly at the "Big Ridge" school off the Gatlinburg Spur. It was a one room schoolhouse with grades 1-8. She later was employed at the Cliff Dwellers shop and The Gatlinburg News newspaper.
After her marriage she devoted her life to raising her family.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband Newton Williams, parents Giles and Alice Reagan Newman, infant sons Robin and Scott Williams, brothers Glenn, Sam, Earl and Edd Newman, sisters Eda Newman, Yvonne Marine and Gertrude Newman.
Left behind to honor and cherish her memory are daughters and sons-in-law, Delight and Ronnie Cook of Pigeon Forge, Yvette and Eddie Rupard of Gatlinburg, Ramona Jenkins of Gatlinburg; grandchildren, Rachel Cook, Ryan Rupard and Amy Clinton; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Dottie Newman; sisters-in-law, Ruby Williams and Frances Williams; numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to Rachel, Jessica, Rhonda, John and others at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center; also, to roommate Jane Brown for her special concern.
The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Wednesday with funeral service to follow at 7 PM in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Watson officiating. Family and friends will meet 10 AM Thursday in Glades Lebanon Cemetery for interment with Rev. Ben Whitted officiating. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchelyfuneralhome.com)
