Russell Homer Bales, age 78 of Gatlinburg died Sunday, September 9, 2007 after a long illness.
Russ was born on December 4, 1928 in the foothills of Mt. Leconte on land that would become part of the national park. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II on the U.S.S. Yuma in the Pacific Ocean. A member of the American Legion for over 50 years, Russ was also a lifelong member of Laurel Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Gatlinburg. For many years he was a carpenter in Sevier County working for Quality Construction Company, building many of the homes, banks and businesses in the area. Along with his wife, he was also co-owner of Bales Cabins in Gatlinburg, a business his father started in the early 1950s.
Russ was a gentle father and husband who loved strawberries, beekeeping and UT sports. His family will sadly miss him.
Russ is preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Homer Bales and sister Edith. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Helen (Latham) and immediate family: Stephen Lyn Bales, Lindalee Thomas, Darlene and David Brett and grandchildren: Leighanna, Michael and Logan Brett; brother Rubin and sister-in-law, Micki Bales of Umatilla, Florida.
Funeral service 7PM Tuesday in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Elders Marvin and Ralph Smith officiating. Interment 10AM Wednesday in Shiloh cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Tuesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
