Rubin O. Bales, age 90 of Umatilla, FL, formerly of Gatlinburg, TN, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017. Mr. Bales was born and raised in Gatlinburg. He was a veteran of Army Air Force and served as a movie projectionist in Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he returned home and continued to work as a movie projectionist and became an avid bowler, and served as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years with the Gatlinburg Fire Department. In 1954, he built the Town and Country Motel which he helped run and maintain with his wife until their retirement in 1990. Mr. Bales was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He attended Life Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Pearl Bales, his brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Mildred “Micki” Bales of Umatilla, FL; son, William “Bill” (Nicole) Bales; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Graveside service and interment 11 AM Saturday in Smoky Mountains Memory Gardens with Rev. Ed Parton officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post 104. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
