Stella Parton to represent aviation museum

SEVIERVILLE - As the younger sister of Sevier County's favorite citizen, Dolly Parton, Stella Parton has made quite a name for herself as an award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and author.
Now she can add a new title to her resume - the official spokeswoman for the Tennessee Museum of Aviation and Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame.
"The museum is in my hometown and a wonderful addition to Sevier County," said Parton. "It is wonderful entertainment but very educational. The aviation museum is a wonderful thing for children to come through.
"I am involved in educational pursuits within all areas," Parton continued. "Aviation is just a fabulous thing. I just thought it was a wonderful addition to the community, and I wanted to contribute in any way that I could."
Bob Minter, executive director of the Tennessee Museum of Aviation, said in a press statement that he and the museum's board of directors are delighted about Parton's interest in the museum.
"Stella Parton has agreed to represent this museum because she understands the museum's mission and why we are here and what we are doing," said Minter.
He said that plans surrounding Parton's role with the museum are in a formative stage, but he envisions her advocacy to be especially important in communicating the value of the museum experience and educational programs to mothers and educators.
"Aviation museums are often perceived as being heavily male oriented, and we'd like to change that," Minter said. "Women have always played significant roles in aviation, and the technology developed in aviation and aerospace touches our lives in literally thousands of ways.
"Stella understands this, and I think she will be a very effective advocate for the Tennessee Museum of Aviation and particularly for our educational outreach programs," Minter added.
Parton said she plans to speak at different functions and fund-raisers for the museum, plus inform the public about all the programs and services the museum offers.
"There are already program tours available," said Parton. "They will have interactive things, like showing how to fly planes and history lessons of aviation.
"There are a number of airplanes flown in World War I and World War II and other aircraft that people would be amazed at," said Parton. "They come and go, and there's always something new."
Parton said she has asked her legendary sister to be involved with the museum.
"I don't know if she has the time," said Parton. "She has done so much and has continued to do so much. I can handle the museum part, unless there's something special we can utilize her for."
Other than her involvement with the museum, Parton said she is active with projects to stop domestic violence and is currently working on a new contemporary gospel album.
She also recently completed work on an independent film in Los Angeles, with some of her music featured on the film's soundtrack. She is also considering taking the lead in an upcoming musical.
"I'm kinda busy," Parton laughed.
