  Lorenzo E. Carter was born in the Wood River Community. He was listed with his parents in the 1818 and 1820 State Census of Madison County and also the 1820 Federal Census of Madison County. Lorenzo E. moved with his parents from Madison County to Greene County, Illinois in 1820. They settled in Section 25, Township 11, Ragne 13 which is now Walkerville Township. He was listed with his parents in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois. Lorenzo E. and Sarah were listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois. There were two children in the household then, a daughter named Evaline, age 3; and a son named John, age 1. Lorenzo E. and his wife Sarah Silkwood were listed in the 1860 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois. There were now five children in the home: Ladicia E., age 13; john, age 11; George, ag 9; Mary E., age 5; and Sylvia J., age 1.
