"Pops" Mr. "Pops" Robert Alfred Phillips , age 89 of Danville, formerly of Newport, Tenn. passed away on April 2, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.Mr. Phillips was born in Dandridge, Tenn. on April 12, 1926, a son of the late Jacob Cline Phillips and Nanny Martin Phillips .He served in the U. S. Navy and was assigned to the USS Cascade where they fought in the last big battle of World War II. A member of the American Legion Post # 325 and the V. F. W. Post # 647. Mr. Phillips was an avid gardener and loved sharing his produce. He was retired as a pipe fitter and heavy equipment operator with Haymes Bros. Construction Company.He is survived by a loving wife of 47 years, Marie Osborne Phillips of Danville; daughter, Sarah Faye Phillips ; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim " Chopper " (Johnnie Sue) Phillips , Jerry (Diane) Phillips ; brother, Jimmy Phillips of Newport, Tenn.; grandchildren, Michael Craig Phillips of Newport, Tenn., Heather "Sissy' Webb (Brandon) of Dandridge, Tenn., Brittany Phillips Collett (Kevin) of Maryville, Tenn., Jeremy Jacob Phillips of Newport, Tenn., and Ashley Phillips Matio (Jessie) of Mandaville, La., and eight great-grandchildren.The family would like to thank the staff of Kindred Hospital and Dr. Vassireddy for the excellent care that was given during his time there and to special friends, Matt Foster and Joan Brumfield.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 a 2 p.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Frank Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post # 1097.The family request that memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 1 until 2 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence 722 Patton Street.Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Phillips family.
