SEVIERVILLE - Four generations ago, the great-grandfather and grandfather of Seth and Daniel Webb founded McNelly-Whaley Motor Co.
Originally a Chrysler dealership, the duo of Horace McNelly and Minyard Whaley switched over to Ford on June 15, 1957. On Thursday, officials from Ford presented the company with a plaque recognizing 50 years of service.
"We've never seen a dealership as dedicated to the community as McNelly-Whaley," zone manager Christina Croteau said. "They've had 50 years of excellent sales and service for Ford Motor Co. We look forward to another 50 years of doing business together."
Originally located in downtown Sevierville, the business moved to Dolly Parton Parkway in 1968. Minyard Whaley's son-in-law, Lynn Webb, took over as president in 1976, and his sons now manage the dealership as vice presidents.
"We are very proud to be a part of the Ford company," Daniel Webb said. "They've been good to us for the last 50 years. They give us good quality products and great support.
"We've been able to keep going through four generations of our family because of the great people of Sevier County. Hopefully, we'll give four more generations of service to the residents of this county."
Local officials lauded the achievements of McNelly-Whaley as well as the company's contributions to the community.
"McNelly-Whaley has been a vital part of Sevier County for a long time," Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters said. "We give our congratulations to them on 50 years with Ford. They do a lot of community charitable work. We truly appreciate what they've done and continue to do for us."
