Ennis Ownby , 78, a resident of Cleveland, loving husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his residence.
He was born in the Great Smoky Mountains and moved to Cleveland at the age of 16. Ownby was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II with the 1393 Engineers in the Pacific Theater. He worked for 25 years at Dixie Foundry and Magic Chef, and, before his illness, was employed as a carpenter.
He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late Eli and Lillie Ownby . He was also preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Edith Johnson Ownby .
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Johnson Ownby of Cleveland; two daughters and sons-in-law: Brenda and Reggie Swafford, and Zandra and Harold Morris, all of Cleveland; one son and daughter-in-law: Mervin and Debbie Ownby of Cleveland; six grandchildren: Eric Swafford and wife Nikki, Jennifer Hannah and husband Derrick, Brad Montgomery and wife Tricia, Blake Morris, Jonathon Ownby and Justin Ownby , all of Cleveland; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Irene and Wilbur Keys, Marie and Wildon Carroll, all of Cleveland, and Reba and Hoyt Teague of Delano; two brothers and sister-in-law: Melvin Ownby , and Duel and Lucille Ownby , all of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral swill be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Spencer and the Rev. R.T. Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family requests memorials be made to Bradley Home Health/Hospice, 175 24th Street N.W., Cleveland, TN 37311, or to Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund, 3119 Spring Place Road S.E., Cleveland, TN 37323.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
