Funeral services for Ila Belle Andrews of El Reno were held Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at First Christian Church with Rev. Ronnie Fields officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha. Services were under direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.
Ila died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Parkview Hospital. The youngest of five children, she was born Aug. 3, 1916, at Tabler, Grady County, Okla., to Richard M. and Alice Hurd Ogle. After graduating from Friend School, she joined the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She met her future husband, Carl W. Andrews, an Army careerist, who was her basketball coach in the Army.
After their marriage, the Army took the couple to many places around the world. They lived in Greece and Germany, California, New Jersey, New York and Texas. In later years, Ila and Carl were house parents at the American Legion Boys Home in Ponca City.
Ila was employed as a teller and new accounts officer with Fidelity Bank in Oklahoma City. She retired in 1978 when she was 62. Ila moved to El Reno 30 years ago. A sports enthusiast, she was an avid golfer and continued to enjoy an active life in many areas of the community. She was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, the Republican Women's Club and Elks Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; sisters, Rebecca Cavin and Mary Cropp; a brother, Mack Lee Ogle; a niece, Sue Handley; and a nephew, Joey Johnson Jr.
Ila is survived by a sister, Lillie Johnson, age 102, of Alex; beloved nieces, Judy Hamby and husband, Tom of El Reno, Jamie Colwell and husband, Keith of Dallas, Texas, Willena Brown and husband, Walter of Dallas, Phyllis Cornelius and husband, Guy of Amarillo, Texas, Jo Ann Gossman and husband, Bruce of Van Buren, Ark., and Jan Story of Alex. Also, nephews, Richard Ogle and wife, Vonna of Fletcher, Richard Johnson and wife, Renee of Alex, and James Johnson and wife, Donna of Chickasha; and many great-nieces and nephews.
Ila had a special friend, the late Carlos Weaver of El Reno. She was fortunate to have the support of Carlos and his family, who were loving and caring in so many ways. If you had known Ila, you would have heard her say many times, "No one could be happier than I have been. My life has been so wonderful."
The family suggests memorials may be made in Ila's name to First Christian Church, Mobile Meals or Russell-Murray Hospice.
