"Jauch, 1887613, Pvt. Howard W., Co. F. Information given by [Archie] Timblin, Cpl. Co. F. Howard Jauch and I were members of the same squad. He was wounded at the Battle of Chipilly Ridge Aug. 9, 1918, about 5:35 p. m. We were lying down under a heavy fire. He was lying beside me when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel. He said, ''I am hit.'' I asked him if it was bad. He said, ''I don't think so." He didn't want us to give him first aid and didn't want to be sent back. He was not in great pain and considered it a slight wound. He said, ''It doesn't amount to anything. Go on and don't bother about me." I came back about seven o'clock but he had been removed. I didn't see or hear anything about him until we were notified of his death the next day at the hospital.

Private Howard W. Jauch, died of wounds, was a son of Fred C. Jauch of 1129 South Euclid avenue, Oak Park. He entered the service last October with the Three Hundred and thirty-second field artillery and was later transferred to the One Hundred and Thirty-first infantry, with which he went to France last May. He was formerly in the employ of the First National bank of Chicago. He was a leader in the Willard Memorial Methodist church and was especially interested in the Methodist young people's societies. He was engaged to Miss Irene Routzahn of 1124 South Wenonah avenue, Oak Park.
