Jonas Harding Whaley, 93, of Decatur, and a former resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at a local hospital. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. Jonas received the Bronze Star for his role in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired as an accountant. His hobbies included wood working (furniture), farming and gardening. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Laura Whaley. Jonas came from a family of 11 children and was the last to survive.
Survivors include his wife, June Thearle Whaley of Decatur; and many special friends.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with military honors.
His family will receive friends on Sunday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
