Elsie Garner Houston passed away May 21, 2013, at her residence in Maryville. Mrs. Houston was born on January 15, 1924, in Knox County, to Allen and Eliza (nee: Lundy) Garner. She was married to Charlie Wade Houston, her loving husband and best friend for nearly 70 years. Prior to her declining health, Elsie was an unwavering member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Alcoa and served dutifully in many capacities. Among Mrs. Houston’s former duties at the church was trustee, member of Choir #1, Sunday school teacher, and Rose of Sharon Missionary Society, and service as chairperson for various special emphasis programs. A proud matriarch, Mrs. Houston always stressed family harmony, education and career achievement. Besides being a committed homemaker, Mrs. Houston was former director of the Blount County Girls Club and former manager of the Hall Community swimming pool for more than 13 years. During her career, she received numerous commendations. She often stated that she was most proud of watching young girls develop into responsible caring adults. She received a career achievements award from the Blount County Boys and Girls Club. After her retirement, Mrs. Houston and her husband traveled extensively throughout the country visiting their children, grandchildren and friends. Mrs. Houston enjoyed working in her well-manicured flower garden, attending basketball and football games at the University of Tennessee, New York Knicks basketball games, and participating in the Kentucky Derby festivities each year. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William T. Garner; and an infant sister, Margaret Garner. She is survived by her compassionate husband, Charlie Wade Houston of Maryville; faithful sons, Wade (Alice) Houston, Louisville, Ky., and Charles “CA” (Annazette) Houston, Knoxville; an adoring daughter, Janet Houston (Donald) Hickman, Maryville; steadfast and a loyal niece, Sonja (Carl) Armstrong, Knoxville; helpful nephew, Bryan Garner and Carolyn Stinnett; sister-in-law, Anna Garner, Maryville, TN.; grandsons Kirsten Houston, Knoxville; Allan (Tamara) Houston, Greenwich, CT; George Hickman, Alcoa; granddaughters Angel (Demetrius) Franklin, Louisville, Ky., Dawn Alane (Alexander) Hickman, Atlanta, Ga., Lynn (Clarence) Moore, Cut Off, La., Tahnee (Ricky) Smith, Tifton, Ga., Dr. Natalie (Condrad) Daniels, Louisville, Ky., Mikal (James) Black, Los Angeles, Calif., Leigh Gibson (Cincinnati, Ohio); and Caci Bundy-Houston, Silver Spring, Md.; stepgrandson, Troy Fields, Nashville, Tenn.; stepgranddaughter, Brianna Fields, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; 26 great-grandchildren; great-nieces and nephew, Teresa Garner, Tracee Garner and Tristen Garner, Alcoa; cousins, Mary Fine Murray, Cleveland, Ohio, William T. Lundy, Alcoa, and numerous other relatives and friends. She is also survived by her unwavering friend, Thelma Brown, Alcoa. Other friends to include Sandra Hudson, Maryville, Hattie Watts, Louisville, Thelma Carr, and Dorothy Mynatt, Alcoa. Special love and appreciation to her devoted caregivers, Lora Annette Love, Clara Wilburn, and Peggy Harper, and the Hospice nurses at Blount Memorial Hospital, especially Traci. Family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, at Rest Haven Baptist Church in Alcoa. The memorial services will follow immediately afterward. Interment will be at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Alcoa.
