The first principal of Edgemont School and a former Newport postal supervisor, Harrison "Botch" Whaley, died after a long illness on Sunday. He was 79.
In 1999 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery and treatments.
He grew up in the Greenbriar Cove of the Great Smoky Mountains in Sevier County and never knew the exact date of his birth. His father, McKinley Whaley, died when Harrison was about six months old.
His older brothers were Burl Whaley and Dewey Whaley, of Washington.
The midwife signed all the birth certificates of those born that spring on July 10, although he selected June 23, Father's day, as his birthday.
Raised by neighbors, he left home at age 10 and sought his fortunes at Cosby, first living with "Papaw Cook." and met up with the Wal Larges at Larges Grocery, where he worked for years. They raised him.
When he was 18, he was drafted and served during World War II on the destroyer escort the USS Mosley for three years. The Navy crew helped search for submarines in the Atlantic.
After his honorable discharge, he had saved enough money to pay his way through college at East Tennessee State University, where he also ran track events and played baseball for ETSU. He taught at Harmony Grove, Del Rio and was the first principal of Edgemont. He later taught at Cosby and also coached basketball.
In 1952, he married the former Jennie Ruth Breeden. They had four children: David, Kenny, Judy, and Gail. All are educators, except Kenny, who is a dispatcher with the Cocke County Sheriff's Department and former patrol deputy.
In 1955, he joined the Newport Post Office under Postmaster Paul Penland. After 32 years, he retired as superintendent of mail, but continued to work as a courier for Merchants & Planters Bank for 10 years.
Although he was always a hard working, diligent man, he enjoyed his free time and particularly sports, whether coaching his children and others, sports fishing, or playing golf.
"He wanted everyone to have something else to do besides work," said his daughter and educator, Judy Whaley Webb.
"Dad loved trips to Myrtle Beach with his family and friends. He loved his golfing buddies and always made time for friends and neighbors, whether cracking and sharing walnuts, helping them fill out income tax forms, or sharing produce from his garden. He will be missed by a devoted family, and many, many good friends," said Judy Whaley.
Botch Whaley was always optimistic and positive and never complained particularly when fighting cancer. He would never give up whether in sports, coaching or trying to overcome illness.
He was a member of Webb Baptist Church, charter member of the Cosby Ruritan Club, and also of Newport Lodge 234.
A Masonic service will be tonight, Tuesday at 8 p.m., at Manes Funeral Home and the funeral on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with burial in the Breeden Cemetery of Bogard.
