Johnny D. Ownby, age 83 of Sevierville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Johnny was born February 10, 1933 in Gatlinburg, TN. He graduated from Pi Beta Phi High School and Carson Newman College with a degree in Business Administration. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville where he taught the Johnny D. Ownby Sunday School Class. Throughout his membership he served on various committees, ministries and service projects.
His love and desire for history and traveling led him to visit all 50 states, Canada and many foreign countries with a special place in his heart for Colorado. He was an avid hiker and loved his mountains.
Johnny was an accountant for Dempster Brothers in Knoxville, TN and served on the Sevierville Election Commission. He retired from the state of Tennessee as a tax auditor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabell and John Dallard Ownby; and loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Rogers Ownby.
Survivors include his Son: J. Roger Ownby and wife Sandra of Sevierville;
Sister: Phyllis Whaley of Gatlinburg ;
Sisters-in-law: Irene Rogers Reed of Sevierville, and Ruby Rogers Price and husband Howard of Harriman, TN;
Numerous nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends 5-6:45 PM Friday at First Baptist Church, Sevierville with a celebration of Johnny's life to follow at 7 PM with Rev. Jerry Hyder, Rev. Dan Spencer and Rev. Scott Andrews officiating. Family and friends will meet 11 AM Saturday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens in Pigeon Forge. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School Class.
