Roy Lee “Goose” Irwin, born April 17, 1931, of Greenback, formerly of Knoxville and Kingsport, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was retired from Pitney-Bowes, Inc. and a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Irwin was a member of Gayland Heights Baptist Church and a member of George Washington Lodge #181, Shriner, and a former member of Blount County Klown Club, as Goo Goo the Clown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mary Irwin; sister, Dorris Dyer; brothers, E.L. and Kenneth Irwin. He is survived by his wife, Betty Thompson Irwin; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Lance Fear; son, Stan Irwin; grandchildren, Ashley and Charles Herrell, Erin and Nate Carbaugh, Lisa Irwin, Ryan Irwin, and David Fear; great-grandchildren, Emma, Molly, and Jack Herrell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries, PO Box 3310 Knoxville, TN 37927-3310 or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children®, Office of Development 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607. Funeral Service will be held at Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Miller Funeral Home, Magnolia Chapel, Rev. James Lawhorn officiating. Family and friends will gather at 1:00 PM Thursday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for the graveside service.
