HOLLAND, LEO B. - age 90, of Oak Ridge passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was born in Kane, PA on November 4, 1920. He served for three years in the United States Army/Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theater and was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant. While studying at Case University in Cleveland, Ohio he met Florence Williams, the love of his life to whom he has been married for nearly 61 years. Upon graduation, he moved to Oak Ridge to begin his forty year-plus career as a nuclear engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's X-10 Tower and Shielding. Even though he retired in 1990, he came out of retirement on three occasions to work as a consultant. He was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and gave speeches on the Sacrament of Marriage, at which time he often spoke about his beloved six children. He taught in the RCIA program and he faithfully participated in Perpetual Adoration every Sunday. He also was an active volunteer for CONTACT Suicide Hotline. Leo was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and wonderful friend that always helped others. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo W. Holland; mother, Josephine Holland; and sister, Joan Holland. He is survived by his loving wife, Florence Holland; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Frank Shields of Crystal Lake, IL; four sons and daughters in law; Mark and Allison Holland of San Diego, CA, Leo Daniel and Pat Holland of San Diego, CA, Dr. John and Peg Holland of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Douglas and Julie Holland of Knoxville, TN and daughter, Anne Holland of New York, NY; grandchildren, Dr. Jacob Shields, Andrew Shields, Adam Holland and Kristen Holland and their mother, Sandra Holland, Joel Shields, Cooper Holland, Caroline Holland, Ustine Holland, Catherine Holland, Leda Holland, Madison Holland, Luke Holland, Nathan Holland; great-grandson, Luke Shields; brother, Tom Holland, of Richardson TX and sister, Romaine Montgomery of Phoenix AZ. The Funeral Mass will be held for Leo at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge on Monday, June 13th at 11:00 AM with Father Bill McKenzie officiating. Visitation at the church will be from 10-11am.
