Carl H. (Bunk) Myers, 87, of Bryson City, N.C., passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at Swain Memorial Hospital. He was born August 3, 1923. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rosetta Stinnett Myers; brothers, Earl, JD, Arthur and Frank (Speedy); sisters, Wanda, Lilly, Cathy and Teresa. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bryson City and served on the Board of Deacons. He was also a veteran of World War II and served in the 35th Infantry Division and awarded a Purple Heart. Bunk loved high school football and attended many Swain High and Townsend games. Carl was a man of great character who led an inspiring yet uncomplicated life, making God, family and friends his top three priorities. He lived in three homes during his time on earth: Townsend, where he was born and raised; Bryson City, N.C., where he lived his final 27 years and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where he lived, worked and played during the middle part of his life. He retired in 1983 with 30 years service to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Maintenance Division. He served with honor in WWII serving in the U.S. Army and participated in several major combat campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, where he was presented The Purple Heart for wounds received. He will be missed by all who knew him but in particular by his loving wife Lois, who has shown all of us what love and commitment really means through their 60-year marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Mary Myers Jr. of Maryville; daughters and sons-in-law: Debbie and Danny Muse of Bryson City, N.C., Gana and Tim Smith of Tega Lay, S.C.; two granddaughters; four grandsons; and two great-grandsons; brother, Mike; sisters, Dorothy, Mary, Libby and Patty. The family and friends will meet at Bethel Cemetery in Townsend at 1:30 p.m. Thursday January 20, 2011, for a graveside service with Rev. John Tagliarini officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to be made to the charity of your choice.
