Luther Keller, age 82, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ January 6, 2011 at Colonial Hills Nursing Home in Maryville. Luther, a Professor of Agricultural Economics, taught at the University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources for more than 30 years. He served as chairperson for more graduate students than any other department faculty member. He headed the UTK Faculty Senate from 1973-74 and was a member of the UTK Graduate Council from 1976-79 and 1986-89. He won the Gamma Sigma Delta Teaching Award in 1975, the Pendergrass Award for Professional Excellence in 1979 and was named the College’s Outstanding Teacher in 1990, the Ronald McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Award in 1990 and Chancellor’s Citation of Extraordinary Service in 1993.Luther was a loving husband, father and grandfather (Pepaw); always caring for the needs of those around him and spreading his never ending love for his family. Luther was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nellie Keller, and brothers Claude, CL, and Boyd; sisters Opal, Eileen, Velma and Macie. Luther is survived by loving wife, Ruth Keller; sons and daughter-in-laws, David and Jenny Keller of Kingston, Jim and Jerry Keller , Doug and Paula Keller of Knoxville; daughters and son-in-laws, Becke and Jim Snyder of Charlotte, NC, and MeLisa and Greg Stinson of Knoxville; and grandchildren Sydney Stinson, Jay Keller, Matthew Snyder, Cari Gibson, Colleen Keller, Sara Wells, Mindy Keller; brother and sister-in-law Daril and Doris Keller of Knoxville, Earl and Patsy Keller of Jacksonville, FL; sisters and brother-in-laws Melba and David Hill of Knoxville. Very special thanks for dad’s personal caregivers, Wilma Sharp and Dwight Burrey, and the staff at Colonial Hills Nursing Home for their love and exemplary care for dad during his illness. The family will receive friends Monday, January 10th at Highland Memorial Funeral Home from 5:00-6:30 pm. Family and friends will have a private burial at Highland Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, January 11th, at 10:00 am. Pastor Sam Polson will be officiating.
