SSgt. Michael Calvin Parrott
SSgt. Michael Calvin Parrott, 49, of Timnath, Colo., and formerly of Canton, was killed in action while serving his country with the United States Army in Iraq on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Suzanne Cody Parrott of Canton and the late Leonard Calvin "L.C." Parrott, who died April 27, 2005.
He was a 1974 graduate of Pisgah High School and a 1983 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, receiving a bachelor's degree in sociology. Following his graduation, he was employed at University of North Carolina at Asheville and was currently an engineering aide in utilities location for Colorado State University for the past 15 years.
He served in the U.S. Army for four years active and 11 years in the active reserve. He was currently attached to the 115th Forward Artillery Brigade of Cheyenne, Wyo.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially running, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, swimming and bicycling. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canton.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Meg Corwin of Timnath and formerly of Franklin; a son, Jason Corwin of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Jim Parrott and wife Peggy of Greenville, S.C.; a niece, Lindsay Parrott; his grandfather, James T. Parrott Sr. of Canton; and his dog, Dixie.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m., at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Rev. Alice Day, Chaplain Dany Taylor and Chaplain Dave Hall officiating. Full military rites will be conducted following the service by a Fort Bragg detachment.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 19, from noon until 2:45 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.
