A couple from Tunnel Hill died Wednesday night in south Georgia when a pickup truck hit their car head on, officials said.
Mark Eldridge, 38, and his wife, Crystal Yvonne Eldridge, 30, were in the front seat of their 2004 Buick heading south on I-75 near Cordele when a GMC pickup traveling north crossed the median and struck the Buick around 10:55 p.m. The GMC was driven by James Allen Jones, 56, of Newnan, who also died in the wreck. Cordele is 60 miles below Macon.
The Eldridges' two children survived the collision. They were riding in the back seat.
For several years Mark Eldridge was a professional wrestler at the Tri-Star Wrestling Association arena on Reed Road. He was known as the military hero "Sarge" and often entered the ring waving an American flag. TWA promoter Doug Watkins said he was very popular.
"The fans loved him, the crowd loved him," Watkins said. "The character he portrayed was great."
An operator with the Georgia State Patrol post in Tifton said Thursday afternoon the wreck remained under investigation and troopers did not know why Jones' truck crossed the median.
"The children were bruised but did not have serious injuries," the operator said. "They were released to their grandparents early Thursday morning."
Survivors and arrangements are expected to be announced today by Julian Peeples Funeral Home, Pleasant Grove Chapel, in Dalton.
