Dennis Akins, 52, died September 1, 2009, in Oxford, AL in a tragic accident.
He was born in Newport, TN on February 23, 1957, the son of Betty Jo (Lewis) Akins and the late Elden V. Akins.
He was educated at Northport Elementary and Cocke County High Schools, graduating from CCHS in 1975.
While in high school, he was employed by Stanbery Machine Shop and later worked there fulltime. He also attended Walters State Community College.
He was a veteran of the US Air Force and at the time of his death was employed at Anniston Army Depot.
He lived for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and for other. He was a wonderful son, husband, daddy, and brother, and, above all, a Christian.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, the former Devon Smith, and two children: Misti Desiree Akins and Christopher Lee Akins, all of Eastaboga, AL; his mother and step-father Eugene and Betty Jo (Lewis) [Akins] Martin; sisters Myra (Mike) Bell and Scottie (Danny) Frye and brother Dwayne Akins, all of Tellico Plains, TN; nephew John Elden Frye, also of Tellico Plains; uncle and aunt Bill and Jackie Lewis, Newport; and a host of other relatives and friends in Newport, Alabama, Georgia, and other Tennessee communities.
Funeral services and burial were held at Word A Live Outreach Church with burial in Dogwood Trails Memorial Gardens in Oxford, AL.
