Blaine Lawson, 27,
Hit Rear Of Truck
At Intersection,
Trooper Reports
BY TOM YANCEY
Blaine Lawson, 27, of Afton, died Tuesday evening when his car struck the rear of a truck that was crossing U.S. Highway 11E at the Bridge Burners Boulevard intersection.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Lawson's 2007 Honda Accord was headed toward Greeneville at about 5 p.m. when it struck the rear of a 2010 Freightliner truck and trailer driven by Edgar Reeves of Edgar Springs, Mo. The trucker was not injured.
Trooper Paul Kilday said the truck was in the process of turning left from Bridge Burners Boulevard onto U.S. 11E, heading in the direction of Interstate 81, and "lacked about three feet of being completely into the turn lane" on the westbound side of the highway when Lawson's vehicle struck the rear end of the truck.
The trooper said the truck driver was not aware of the crash until he stopped and got out afterward. The truck was owned by Borden Trucking, Inc.
The trooper said witnesses who saw the crash said Lawson was not speeding. The road was wet, and it was raining at the time, the trooper said.
"Visibiity could have been an issue. I'm not sure," the trooper said.
"The whole side of the car was pulled away" by the impact, Trooper Kilday said, and the car came to rest in the median.
Lawson was by himself in the car when the impact occurred, the trooper said, and was partially ejected. Trooper Kilday said Lawson was probably wearing a seat belt, though he was not sure Tuesday night.
Paramedics with Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services worked with Lawson at the scene, the trooper said, and then transported him to Takoma Regional Hospital in Greeneville, where he was pronounced dead.
The trooper said late Tuesday night that the accident was still being investigated by the THP Critical Incident Response Team (CRIT).
The trooper said the Mosheim Volunteer Fire Department set up a portable generator and lights, as well as directional signs, to assist the CRIT team for about five hours. The firefighters "were a wonderful help," he said.
The THP was assisted by the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad.
Lawson, whose full name is Leonard Blaine Lawson Jr., is the son of Greeneville businessman and Mrs. Lennie Lawson.
