Hobart Oscar McGill - a Farragut community leader, then a downtown Knoxville businessman and later a restorer of Loudon historic buildings - died Tuesday at Farragut Health Care Center. He was 70.
Mr. McGill was probably best-known when, as a young man growing up in Farragut and Concord, he worked at a community cannery in the old Farragut High School, family members said.
He also served in the U.S. Army in Central Europe during World War II, and he owned a Gulf service station, at Main Avenue and Gay Street, in the mid-!1950s. Later, he worked as a terminal manager for Thurston Freight Lines of Chattanooga. Mr. McGill has been retired for about 20 years.
Even in retirement, Mr. McGill remained active, helping to renovate three historic buildings in downtown Loudon - the old Ferguson machine shop, the Grove Building and the Mulberry Building.
Mr. McGill is survived by his wife, Alma Cooper McGill, and two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Judy McGill of Loudon and Gary and Karen McGill of Morristown. Randall McGill is a former city manager of Loudon.
Visitation is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Weaver's Cumberland Memorial Chapel, 5815 Western Ave., with graveside services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Edgewood Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Weaver's before the services and proceed to the cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to the Loudon County Heritage Association, P.O. Box 466, Loudon, Tenn. 37774.
