Mays, Jr., Hubert Lester (H.L.) –age 72, went to see his Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 14, 2006. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church where he was an inactive deacon and inactive Sunday school teacher. H.L. was a former member of Stock Creek Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was a mason belonging to the Shekinah Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rite. H.L. was an avid golfer. Preceded in death by father, Hubert Lester Mays, Sr.
Survivors include mother, Anna Mae Mays; loving wife of 53 ˝ years, Patsy Cowden Mays; daughter, Kathy Mays Coffey and husband, Charles; son, Jerry Dean Mays and wife, Renee; grandsons, Amon A. and Aaron Brett Mays, C.J. Coffey; step-grandchildren, Cody Hancock, Laura Coffey Hodge, Jennifer Coffey; five great-grandchildren; sister, JoAnn McCarty and husband, Clinton; brother, Gary A. Mays and wife, Jane; many other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held 8 PM on Tuesday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Steve Hancock and Dr. Doug White officiating. Family and friends will meet at Asbury Cemetery on Wednesday for 11 AM interment services. Pallbearers will be his three grandsons and Rusty Buffalow, Rick Mays and Joe Snyder. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riverview Baptist Church General Fund, 3618 Delrose Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37914. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
