Man stabbed to death in Gatlinburg; suspect in custody
By JEFF FARRELL
GATLINBURG —Police here have charged a Harriman man with first-degree murder after the stabbing death of a Gatlinburg man at a local resort.
Anthony Richards, 26, of Harriman, was being held Wednesday at the Sevier County Jail after his arrest for the alleged murder of Derek Ogle, 27, of Gatlinburg.
Gatlinburg Police Chief Randy Brackins said dispatchers received a call about the incident at about 11 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived at Gatlinburg Town Square Resort on Historic Nature Trail Road, they found Ogle suffering from at least one stab wound.
Ogle was taken to LeConte Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Brackins said police have ordered an autopsy at The University of Tennessee Regional Forensics Center.
Richards was taken into custody at the scene, and police found what they believed to be the murder weapon there as well, Brackins said.
It wasn’t clear Wednesday what led to the altercation. “We don’t know, other than they were in some type of altercation at the Town Square condo units,” Brackins said.
He declined to comment on whether the room where the altercation occurred had been reserved in the name of Ogle or Richards.
Officials with Town Square Resort declined to comment on the incident.
It was the second fatal stabbing at a Gatlinburg vacation lodging facility in a few weeks. Police charged a local man with second-degree murder last week after he allegedly killed a Knoxville man April 26 in an altercation at the Super 8 Motel on East Parkway.

Report details fatal incident
by JEFF FARRELL
GATLINBURG — A Harriman man charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a local man told police he pursued his alleged victim and stabbed him after an altercation between the two.
Anthony Travis Richards, 26, of Harriman, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Derek T. Ogle, of Gatlinburg. The warrant charging Richards with murder provides new details on the events surrounding Ogle’s death.
After a report of a disturbance in Gatlinburg Town Square at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, police found Ogle lying on the balcony of a sixth floor room with a stab wound to his chest. Ogle died as a result of his injuries.
Richards had been in an altercation with Ogle just minutes before on the fifth floor, according to the warrant signed by Detective Tim Williams.
“He admitted stabbing Ogle with a butterfly knife but claimed self defense and that it happened in front of his room on the fifth floor,” Williams wrote.
After further investigation, Williams learned that other people had separated the two during their confrontation on the fifth floor and Ogle had left the area, but Williams allegedly pursued him.
“Richards was questioned again and after being advised of his Miranda rights did confess that he pursued Ogle to the sixth floor after he had left the area of his room on the fifth floor and stabbed him,” Williams wrote.
Richards is being held at the Sevier County Jail.

Guilty plea in Ogle stabbing death
SEVIERVILLE — A Harriman man will serve 20 years in prison for the 2011 stabbing death of a Gatlinburg man at a resort.
Anthony Richards was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 27-year-old Derek Ogle, of Gatlinburg. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder and accepted a sentence of 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office.
The two reportedly got into a dispute on May 10, 2011, in the Gatlinburg Town Square Resort on Historic Nature Trail Road, and that led to an altercation that ended with Richards fatally stabbing Ogle.
“The family of Derek Ogle has suffered, and now hopefully they can have some peace in their lives,” District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn said.
Ogle was found in a sixth-floor room with the fatal wound. Police reports indicated that shortly before that, Ogle and Richards had been in an altercation on the fifth floor. The two were separated, but witnesses said after Ogle left they believed Richards pursued him.
According to his arrest warrant, Richards told police they began fighting again at the sixth floor room and he stabbed Ogle in self defense.
Dunn said he appreciated the work of Gatlinburg Detective Tim Williams and the Gatlinburg Police Department, along with emergency responders and other witnesses in the case.
“All of the time and hard work that these individuals put into this case helped lead to the guilty pleas of Mr. Richards,” he said.
